THE OLD MAN OVER THERE

LOGLINE:

From childhood through adulthood a woman occasionally spots the same old man looking at her.

SYNOPSIS:

It’s 1940. Dorothy, 10, and her family are dressed up and have their pictures taken in front of their house. Dorothy notices an old man across the street. A moment later the man is gone.

There is a block party celebrating the end of the war. Dorothy and her siblings pose for a picture. She sees the old man, who disappears into the crowd.

Dorothy and her friends take a stroll in a nearby cemetery. A friend has a camera. They pose for a picture and Dorothy sees the old man in the distance. He disappears behind a large monument. None of her friends see the old man.

Dorothy, 19, is in a company play. She sees the man in the audience.

Dorothy and her friends go touring in Washington, DC. She sees the old man in her camera lens and snaps a picture. She is happy she can prove the old man exists. She is disheartened and confused when the old man isn’t in the picture.

She sees the old man at her wedding, her reception, and her honeymoon. He always has the same odd clothes.

The old man is there when she has a day at the beach with her family.

Dorothy’s Aunt Tessie proposes the old man is a ghost she disturbed with her strolls to the cemetery.

The family doesn’t take Aunt Tessie seriously. Dorothy’s sister advises her to ignore the old man.

At a New Year’s Eve party in 1959 Dorothy sees the old man numerous times inside the house. She discreetly tries to face the man, but he always eludes her.

John, 65, scoops up some old pictures and puts them in a strong box. He drives to see his mother in a nursing home. His mother is in the later stages of dementia. He spots his mother in the day room.

An elderly Dorothy sees John. He is the old man.
