1 IN THE CHAMBER
By Diana Wright

GENRE: Action, Comedy
LOGLINE:

When a commitment-phobic assassin gets knocked up against company guidelines, she sets out to kill THE white whale of hits to cement her place in hitman history before she and her baby can be "retired."

SYNOPSIS:

XO, a badass assassin raised to be a killing machine from birth, thinks family and friends are liabilities. She's busy being the top hired gun at her underground murder for hire company, Cold Storage, and not dumb enough to weaken herself with attachments. Xo’s boss, GABRIELA, is also the woman who plucked Xo from an orphanage as a baby to mold the perfect super-soldier (but don’t ever, ever, ever call her Mom!) Xo’s life is exactly the way she wants it—cold, empty, career-focused. Okay, maybe she’s been secretly banging a smoke show assassin from a rival agency for years, but she's keeping it completely emotionless.

But Xo’s perfect life is tainted when the big boss retires and puts CHET 3 (yes, there are three Chets at this office) in charge, instead of promoting Gabriela. Chet 3 is a major bro and your standard fail-upward oblivious-to-his-privilege mansplainer. As a celebration present, he gets everyone in the office surprise DNA tests to find out their heritage. Yes, he put a bunch of off-the grid assassins into a public database that’s designed to connect estranged families and find out who’s grampa got around. He’s not good at his job. Chet 3 also informs Xo she must “retire” aka kill (you get it) her co-worker JANICE, one of those fun psychopaths and Xo’s work rival.

Assuming Janice sold company secrets, Xo sneaks into her house and discovers Janice has been hiding a secret pregnancy. While attempting to fight to the death in an excessively baby proofed nursery that is too safe to kill anyone, Xo realizes Janice’s only crime against the company is having a baby. Xo surprises herself by offering to help Janice fake her death and get away. In the process, she discovers she’s pregnant herself. FUCK. Xo makes plans to end the pregnancy, but realizes she actually wants to keep this kid. She can have it all, right? All she has to do is become so irreplaceable at work that no one will dare “retire” her and to do that, she’ll have to go after the white whale of kills – THE GHOST, a Columbian drug lord so dangerous, no one has been able to kill him. In fact, Gabriela has forbid anyone from even trying, it’s too impossible. Except now work throws her another curveball, Chet 3 wants Xo to babysit a new recruit SONNY, an overeager suck up who’s ready to be in the way. Annoyed she has to babysit, Xo turns it into an opportunity – she can literally babysit Sonny, using him as a test child to prove to herself she can be the mother she never had. So she cuts up his grapes and reminds him to go potty while killing and hiding her growing baby. Having it all is fun, right? But when a kill goes wrong and Xo realizes Cold Storage does NOT only kill bad guys like Gabriela always told her, Xo decides she’s not fit to be a mother and calls an adoption agency. That’s when she’s kidnapped—the company must have discovered her pregnancy and ordered her retirement. TWIST! Turns out it’s just Xo’s new and only friend, Janice, with a surprise gender-reveal-party on a shooting range! But just as they start shooting overly cute, shower-themed targets, the fun is shattered by the 3 Chets trying to kill them. The company DID find out about Xo's pregnancy. It’s a shoot-out mixed with a gender reveal (Congratulations, it’s a boy!) that Xo and Janice barely escape.

Xo figures out it was Sonny that narked about her pregnancy and that he’s a double agent for the Ghost. So she forces him to take her to the Ghost, but lets her guard down, allowing Sonny to triple-cross her. She’s captured. But instead of being brutally murdered, Xo is welcomed with opened arms by the Ghost! He’s her father and he’s been searching for her her entire life. After being alerted by the DNA test, he sent Sonny to bring Xo home. He shows Xo her pristine (completely bullet and bomb-proof) nursery, tells her he adopted Sonny as an attempt to fill the void but it never worked. He’s ecstatic to finally be a father and soon a grandfather! That’s when a shot is fired at the Ghost. It’s Gabriela, she’s come to rescue Xo. The Ghost smiles even bigger – the entire family is here! What?! Yup, turns out Gabriela is Xo’s actual flesh and blood mom. To keep Xo and herself safe, she pretended Xo was just her adopted super-soldier trainee that she had no feelings for. Gabriela, like her daughter, fraternized with the enemy, then shielded him from being killed all these years. Xo goes from no parents to a lot of family very quickly. Babies tend to bring families together in that way.

Only, no surprise really, Sonny never appreciated living in the shadow of Xo. He fought hard to win his father’s love, even staying at Cold Storage for WAY too long just to break Xo’s kill record. Which no one seems to care about! So he quadruple-crosses them, staging a coup to turn the Ghost’s men against them all. Because if you can have ‘em, murder ‘em. So of course, this is a perfect time for Xo to go into labor.

The Ghost, Gabriela, and Xo fight for their lives while Xo also fights to bring a life into this world. All seems lost, when Janice (with baby in tow) and Xo’s forbidden boyfriend burst in as backup. She did tell them not to come, but she’s got a lot to learn about having friends. Only when Xo is willing to accept help and let loved ones in, are they able to gain the upper hand. Xo gives birth to her baby then uses the placenta and umbilical cord to fight Sonny (talk about delayed cord clamping!) They escape with the help of Janice’s husband PETE, an undercover FBI agent that’s been low-key trying to tell Janice for years and Xo discovers if you open yourself up to having a community, it’s a lot better than going through life alone. Love makes you stronger, not weaker. And even a professional hitman company should have a progressive parental leave policy.
