THE PRINCESS BRIDE II: THE RANSOM OF HOLLYHOCK
By Richard M. Renneboog

GENRE: Family, Fantasy
LOGLINE:

Beware the BRAT spell! Westley and Buttercup must enlist the aid of the Dread Pirate Roberts and other unlikely heroes if they are to rescue their beloved daughter Hollyhock, who has been kidnapped by Prince Humperdinck, the evil Countess Rugen and Miracle Max, before she is thrown from the Cliffs of Insanity into the shrieking eel-infested waters below.

SYNOPSIS:

The son of 'the boy' (from the original movie) visits his grandfather in the nursing home he has been moved into, and discovers the book "The Princess Bride by S. Morgenstern". He insists that he will read this book to his grandfather the way it had been read to his father by his great-grandfather. Though the grandfather is not thrilled with the idea, he acquiesces because he loves his grandson. As the book is read to him, the grandfather becomes enthralled, but is not satisfied with the ending because Humperdinck was not killed. He and his grandson agree that they can make up their own story together as a 'sequel'. Their story begins by telling that Inigo Montoya became the next Dread Pirate Roberts and that Fezzik the Giant had perished in eel-infested waters while trying to set a new world's record for walking underwater while carrying a large rock. Humperdinck and the Countess Rugen conspire to kidnap Westley and Buttercup's daughter Hollyhock by enlisting the aid of Miracle Max. Miracle Max is duped by the conspirators and thinks they only want to help him get some minor revenge because Westley had never properly thanked him for bringing him back to life. Max chooses to put Hollyhock under the B.R.A.T. spell so she would no longer be known as "the most perfect child in all of Florin". The spell can only be broken by 'true love's tears'. The spell is cast, just moments before Westley unexpectedly thanks Miracle Max for saving his life, and subsequently Hollyhock becomes a bad, rotten, absolutely terrible BRAT of a child. At the Old King's Faire, she is lured away by the Countess Rugen who promises to take her on a great adventure. When Westley and Buttercup realize she is missing they call for help in finding her. As this is going on, a clumsy young man with no sword skill somehow manages to kill one of the guards in a duel and runs to answer Westley's call so he can avoid having to confront the dead guard's buddies. Westley is attacked in his place and though victorious, is wounded. The young incompetent says he saw the girl being taken by Countess Rugen, and Westley says they need to put together a crew to rescue her. He laments that Fezzik is no longer available, and is surprised to be met by Fezzik's older brother Andre Thegeant, a dwarf of unbelievable strength who tells them that Fezzik was the freak of the family ("He changed his name from Thegeant to 'The Giant' for professional reasons."). Needing 'brains' to plan the rescue, they are directed to a giant head, where Vissini's twin brother is playing challenges of tic-tac-toe for money. They are able to enlist him to their cause, and he tells them they can get to the Cliffs of Insanity before Countess Rugen if they have a ship as fast as that of the Dread Pirate Roberts. Westley immediately goes out to sea to enlist Roberts' aid, but finds that Inigo Montoya is no longer Roberts. The current Roberts wants to retire, and takes Westley to find Inigo at 'the D.P. Roberts Home for Retired Se men' (the 'a' on the sign has been scratched out). Inigo agrees to take over the ship once more and lead the rescue. There is a secret known only to the Dread Pirate Roberts, a 'goat path' that leads to the top of the Cliffs of Insanity, and both Inigo and Westley are surprised when Fezzik's brother tells them about it ("You think you're the only ones? There's a reason people say the Dread Pirate Roberts is short, you know.") They arrive ahead of Countess Rugen and wait in ambush for her as Westley goes on ahead to find Miracle Max. Instead, they find only Valerie, who agrees to go with them to rescue Max so he can help reverse the spell he has placed on Hollyhock. Max is found lying on a large flat rock, filled with remorse and waiting for Death to come for him. Valerie convinces him that if he comes with them all will be forgiven.

Meanwhile, Countess Rugen is sailing toward the Cliffs of Insanity with Hollyhock, who is slowly but surely driving her quite mad with her bratty behaviour. They reach the top of the Cliffs of Insanity and are confronted by the bumbling swordsman. Hollyhock knocks his helmet askew with a rock, and Countess Rugen then easily disarms him with a little stick. After knocking him out, Countess Rugen and Hollyhock make their way through the Fire Swamp. Partway through, they stop and are challenged by Andre Thegeant. The Countess tricks him into triggering a falling tree trunk trap over a lightning sand pit. Andre catches the tree trunk but the force of it drives him through the bottom of the pit and into a fast-flowing underground river. The river deposits him into the Lower Swamp where he comes face to face with a giant two-headed snake. The Countess and Hollyhock continue on their way and are met by Vissini's twin, who challenges the Countess to a battle of wits involving two poisoned cups. She counters by asking him if he knows what is curare, and shoots curare-tipped dart at his forehead. As he sits, a slobbering heap unable to move, they leave and continue on until they are met by Humperdinck who takes them to the crumbling heap that is his 'castle' ("What a dump.").

The now drunken Bumbling Hero finds Vissini's brother and brings him back to Miracle Max's cabin. There, Westley is told that the curare can be countered by a potion for which he needs a scale from a live giant two-headed snake as well as a couple of common herbs. Westley and Buttercup head for the swamp to find what they need. As they talk in the gathering gloom of evening a giant three-headed snake rises up behind Buttercup, but they soon find that the third head is that of Andre Thegeant ("I'm a wrestler. We wrestled. I won, and now the beast does what I want.") Back at Max's cabin, the counter potion is prepared, and a plan is concocted to storm Humperdinck's castle. The Bumbling Hero and Vissini's brother will approach from the front, pretending they are completely defeated and just looking for work, while Westley and the others enter through underground caverns from the Lower Swamp. The front door ambush draws out many of Humperdinck's lackeys, while the giant snake drives the rest before it. Using curare darts and bumbling swordsmanship, the battle goes well, but in the midst of the furor, Humperdinck and Rugen hurry away to the Cliffs of Insanity with Hollyhock in tow, intending to throw her into the eel-infested waters below before Westley and Buttercup can save her. Before they can do this, however, Westley confronts Humperdinck in a sword fight and Buttercup tackles the Countess to the ground. They roll over and over and go over the edge of the cliff. The Countess falls to her doom, and when Hollyhock looks over the edge to see what has happened, she sees her mother hanging on for dear life to a bit of a root. As Buttercup looks up at her, she tells Hollyhock to be brave and that she will always love her. Her 'tears of true love' break the B.R.A.T. spell, and Hollyhock rushes back to the sword fight, where Westley has driven Humperdinck to the ground and is about to run him through. Hollyhock jumps on Humpoerdinck to beg him to help them save her mommy, but Westley has already begun his killing stroke. At the last instant, just before the sword would have skewered Hollyhock, Humperdinck deflects Westley's blade. Her action breaks the B.R.A.T.spell that the Countess Rugen had put on him long ago, and when Andre and the others arrive on the scene they are able to save Buttercup. Westley suggests that the position of Dread Pirate Roberts is open, but Humperdinck declines, promising instead to become the good king that the people deserve. In the end, the Bumbling Hero becomes the next Dread Pirate Roberts, with his friend, Vissini's brother, swabbing the decks. Westley and Buttercup retire to their cottage, where they are last seen caring for their new arrival.

In the end, the grandfather has learned that love makes life worth living, and asks his grandson if he will come back the next day, so they can make up a new story. The boy promises ("As you wish.")

NB: The script calls for voice-overs throughout as the boy and his grandfather talk about things and make up their story. Humorous comments and situations abound.
