A teen daughter must restore her family's sanity by rescuing her mother from a fake cult.
SYNOPSIS:
The Lights is a quirky comedy in the vein of Little Miss Sunshine or Juno.
The Bing household is in chaos without their mother. The eldest daughter, Willow, is willing to give up her dream of art school in an effort to control her two self-destructive sisters. Her father's science brain is detached from the reality of the household. He reaches out for his immature mother to help. When, grandma arrives, she is more like another teen peer, and is unfazed when a sister is caught smoking pot with her guidance counselor.
Willow and her boyfriend Theo travel to Taos to find her mother. The only clue they have is that the Lights make goat cheese. Willow joins the cult as a believable member as Theo stays on the outside working in the dairy department of the local grocery store. Willow fakes her way through the absurd Lightisms to be close to her mom. The presence of Willow doesn’t snap her mom out of her brainwashed state.
Willow discovers the true identity of the cult leader while, Theo encounters his family living a normal life outside of the cult. When guru forces Willow to make an offering to him, she taps into her mother's darkest secret in hopes of weakening her. A plan is set in motion to bust her mother from The Lights.
