Ben Luce: Animator in Portland, Oregon.

Hi, I'm Ben. I'm a 2D animator and illustrator living in Portland, OR. I started doing animation as a kid, beginning with claymation in my basement. I was always drawing, and never for a moment did I think I wouldn't do art as a career. I got hired by a toy designer through my high school's robotics program to create flash animations, web graphics, and toy piece designs. Right before college, I started interning at 1st Ave Machine, a 3D animation studio, in New York. After College (MICA, Baltimore), I did graphics for ESPN and other clients through an agency in Connecticut (where I grew up). This agency pointed me to Portland, and I began a freelance career as a professional 2D animator and illustrator. More recently, I've begun focusing on music videos and short animations. I'm working with James Fenner, an editorial illustrator, to create an animated music video for Portland band Fang Moon. James and I have collaborated in the past. This time, we took inspiration from Fang Moon's retro 70s spacey synth music and developed a story and look influenced by 70s and 80s fantasy and sci-fi. Influences include Ralph Bakshi, Heavy Metal, Le Planete Sauvage, and 80s anime. We are extremely excited to get this project off the ground, but we need your help. We'll be spending 3 months creating the video, which is heavy on detail and character animation. James will design all of the backgrounds and help to develop characters and costumes. I will be doing all of the animation, effects, ands storyboards. We have awesome prizes for our backers. You can get digital downloads of Fang Moon's music, posters of varying sizes, stickers, and pins. The best prizes are for our high-level backers. If you donate $120 or more, we will design a character (background or villain) based on you! We have stretch goals too, including more characters/enemies and a custom zine and alternate poster design. Please help us make this epic video a reality.
