GENRE: Drama, Horror
LOGLINE:

In 1927 Arkansas, a disgraced African American preacher returns to his boyhood farm only to find it possessed by a powerful witch.

SYNOPSIS:

BEL is the story of a disgraced Chicago youth pastor, Reggie, who’s married, but has impregnated a teenage girl (who happens to be the bishop’s daughter!). Reggie then heads south with his band of musicians retreating to his boyhood farm in Arkansas in the hopes of selling some of the property and using the funds to make amends for his transgressions. When Reggie arrives, he must evade the Klan (it is America 1927) and a wild boar that roams the property. After the boar corners Reggie up a tree for a night he is rescued by an extraordinary teenager named Thia who takes him to the farm where Reggie meets Ida and Maeve who inform him that the property cannot be sold only homesteaded.

Undeterred, Reggie decides to muster the nearby township to a tent revival, using his prowess as a healer to fill the collection plates. All goes well until after the potluck when all the attendees fall ill. When rumors swirl that the sickness was caused by the vengeful witch, Nadie, who has long antagonized the community and cursed anyone who sets a toe on the farm, Reggie must confront her, and rid the farm of her.

Reggie’s problems are compounded when he encounters a de facto Grand Wizard, Simon Gage, who is determined to buy the property if only to evict him and all Blacks from the county.

Ambush and betrayal precipitate the showdown between Reggie, the wizard, and the witch!

Hi Benim, I liked your logline but I wonder if we should feel empathy for the preacher - 'disgraced' makes us feel that whatever happens with the witch will serve him right. Maybe that's the intention - but as this reads, there are two antagonists. I hope this helps.

Hi Benim, love the sound of this film and it would grab my attention on a Netflix scroll - I do agree with Selma though - perhaps some reference to villain becoming hero would be good (assuming he does become a hero!). Happy to review and rate again if you reword it.
