A teenage hiking guide struggling to sort out her life ahead of an upcoming move finds herself responsible for her friends' lives when they're stranded in the wilderness with an escaped killer on their trail.

SYNOPSIS:

Jesse is a 17-year-old girl who spends her summers helping her uncle, Trevor, fulfill ranger duties at Fox Hill, a woodland hiking trail located in a sleep coastal Vermont resort town. Although she enjoys the work and has had several happy summers working alongside her friends Marie and Lindsey, the advent of Summer always brings about mixed feelings due to her usual proximity to Tate, a well-to-do boy with whom she once shared a flirtation but who has since abandoned her in favor of maintaining the approval of his own friends, Stephen, Billy, and Jamie. Unbeknownst to anyone, Jesse's family plans on leaving at Summer's end so her father can accept a new job in Massachusetts, a move that her parents also hope will be beneficial for Jesse's academic future.

As Summer begins, Tate- assessing his life choices and future after a suspension following a violent incident at a football game- decides to make amends with Jesse and begin the process of maturing out of his need for his friends' approval. Due to previous failed attempts at reconciliation, Jesse initially rebuffs him, doubting his sincerity; in an effort to de facto force Jesse into a situation where she'll have to hear him out, while also not alienating his friend group, Tate goads Trevor into allowing him to hire her as a trail guide for a nighttime hike up Fox Hill. Although the request is unconventional and night hikes are regarded as generally dangerous, Trevor begrudgingly agrees due to Tate's family's financial influence in town.

Jesse, Tate, and the others embark on their hike; unbeknownst to any of them, an escaped murderer named Conrad Douglas has made his own way to Fox Hill to retrieve a go-bag he left behind there. Although the hike initially goes well and Tate and Jesse find themselves re-warming to one another, the sudden onset of a rainstorm threatens to leave them stranded, and Lindsey is injured when a rope she and Jamie are using to climb a hill is struck by a boulder loosened in the storm. Jesse manages to retrieve Lindsey and get her to a cabin where they make contact with Trevor; having seen fresh boot prints on the hill, Jesse inquires about other hikers, leading Trevor to realize Conrad has made it to Fox Hill. Concurrently, Stephen finds his go-bag and makes plans to take it with him when the group is rescued.

Trevor contacts the police, who arrange for a helicopter to retrieve the hikers, although it will require them to leave the cabin and make it to a clearing where it can land. Armed with a flare gun, Jesse leads them to the meetup spot; having realized that Stephen has the go-bag and that Conrad is stalking them for it, she begins leaving stacks of cash behind as "breadcrumbs" to throw him off of their trail. The group pulls together and works as a cohesive unit to make it to the meetup, where Jesse and Tate cause Conrad to fall to his death after he confronts them.

The hikers are taken back into town, now sharing a newfound admiration and respect for one another. Looking back on the experience after having moved, Jesse recalls that it turned out to be a wonderful summer.
