DMV: LA

DMV: LA
By Alexander Drake

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

Katherine Davino is a fresh-off-the-bus hopeful actor in Hollywood who takes a day job at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where she's thrust into the underbelly of the celebrity lifestyle.

SYNOPSIS:

Katherine is a traditionally raised Southern belle.

She has been a local small town star because of her good looks and acting.

As a native Spanish speaker, her Texan/Mexican roots give her an advantage in the big city.

While paying her bills with a desk job, she encounters a gamut of characters who embody the Hollywood lifestyle. Supporting characters include Levi Deva, the star in an un-filmed reality TV show, and an extra in another reality show.

She works at the desk next to Katherine. Don Won is a retired stunt driver who administers the driving exams at the DMV.

He’s a high-strung adrenaline junkie who forces his driving style on others. Liam Borstein is the only casting agent to have an office inside the DMV.

As a running gag, each episode he will blurt out casting calls from his desk, adjacent to the normal DMV lines. People who think they could get the part step out of the DMV line and into the casting line.

The Transformational Character Actor is a recurring minor character who doesn’t work in the DMV, but constantly shows up as a character in costume, fully committed, seeing if (s)he can fool people with (her)his incredible thespian skills.

DMV: L.A.’s show style is in line with other workplace/situational comedies such as Seinfeld, The Office, and Parks and Recreation.

Each episode, there’s a celebrity guest who must come to the DMV for one reason or another.

Movie star kids need to take driving tests.

Taxes must be paid.

License photos must be taken.

Drunk driving points must be removed.

This trope allows for a weekly guest to play a central or supporting role in the A or B stories.

The A story is always Katherine’s adventure of the week, which might involve the celebrity guest.

The B story is usual Don Won’s, Levi Deva’s, or a casting call from Liam Borstein.
