The best confidence man of his day returns to Seattle for the 1962 World’s Fair to set up the biggest con of his career. But instead, he gets conned by the same guy who ruined his father’s career. Now he’s looking for payback.
SYNOPSIS:
This story is about a skilled con man named Billy Braggs who takes on an apprentice known as "The Kid." They travel to Seattle during the 1962 World's Fair to pull off a long con on Max Wolfe, a real estate speculator and former grifter who double-crossed Braggs' parents years ago.
Along the way, Braggs falls for Cassandra, Max's sister, who is also scheming to steal Max's money to escape with her daughter Amelia. Braggs sets up a high-stakes poker game with Wolfe and other wealthy players. Using The Kid and an elaborate switch, Braggs wins the money and thinks he and Cassandra will run away together.
However, Cassandra double-crosses Braggs to take the money herself. Max kidnaps Amelia to force Cassandra to give up the money. In a chaotic shootout in the alley behind the J&M Cafe, Max and Cassandra end up dead. The money is revealed to have been switched with Pilots baseball programs.
In the aftermath, Braggs and The Kid escape with the real money, continuing their adventures as mentor and apprentice con artists. The story is narrated by an older Amelia recounting the events surrounding her mother's death based on what she was told years later by her guardian Hal.
