A modestly budgeted R-rated comedy in the vein of Step Brothers and 40-Year-Old Virgin. An insecure credit analyst anonymously hires a detective to follow HIM to learn how to keep his girlfriend happy, but the insanely competitive, nut job P.I. drives her away and turns his life into an all-out childish war to win her back. Great set-pieces scenes and monologues make it director- and actor-bait.
SYNOPSIS:
EXCERPTS FROM THREE BLACKLIST EVALUATIONS
CONCEPT
With high energy, inventive jokes, and an empathetic hook, this is a relatable comedy.
Aptly titled, raunchy and ambitious sex comedy with strong romantic elements
... a high-concept premise, and this writer deserves commendation for their keen eye for detail.
CHARACTERS
Jay the protagonist is a deeply flawed but not entirely unsympathetic figure and it's rewarding to follow his journey ... Colleen as the love interest and female lead is a charming character with surprising depth and humor ... SAL as the antagonist is an over the top and impressively indefatigable villain ... KIRK and KATHERINE are strong supporting roles. JAY, SAL and COLLEEN offer the actors playing them ample opportunities to show off their range
THEME/CRAFT
The thematic focus on love, paranoia, and insecurity is quite fecund, and the frank attitude toward sexuality is refreshing. The project is also consistently funny, and the narrative does a fine job of evoking tension and laughs ... its thematic concerns and stylish description remain commendable.
There's an incredible scene where Jay's girlfriend Colleen gets back at him by doing a striptease at an erotic photo exhibit. It's a great flip on the initial spy premise, for her to make Jay uncomfortable by revealing herself to strangers.
The ending, while not entirely unexpected, does feel earned because while it's resolved in an upbeat way.
PROSPECTS
From a budget perspective, the script reads as largely affordable to produce.
This has pretty good prospects, especially on a streaming service.
