SFC Chris Avendano and SGT Ava Johnson bond while training as Arabic linguists. Then Chris goes undercover in Yemen; but when her partial remains surface, and NSA refuses to investigate, Ava, outraged, goes to Sanaa alone to recover her body.
SYNOPSIS:
Training as Arabic Linguists at DLI (Defense Language Institute) isn’t so bad for SFC Ava Johnson and SFC Chris Avendano—there’s a colorful professor, thirty days of cultural immersion in Bahrain, and athletic events. As honor grad, Chris is offered undercover duty in Yemen and takes it. But Ava quickly learns her friend is in real danger. After several blackberry texts, Chris goes silent after a second (marketplace) bombing. A new satellite system that spots the DNA of soldiers locates “Chris” on the load bearing equipment (LBE) worn by a Yemeni (Assam). The Army arrests him. Ava takes part in his interrogation. He admits nothing, then escapes. While there, Ava orders another satellite pass over only the leather weapons harness. The pass confirms Chris’ DNA. Ava brings these remains back for military internment. Then the Army and NSA close the case. Outraged that Chris’ body won’t be recovered, she heads out alone to Sanaa. A visiting linguist, Dubek, connects Ava to Amir in Sanaa. Amir meets her at the airport and houses her with his aunt Ischer and her son Basheer.
Enroute to the Sanaa Police station, Ava accidentally meets detective Rasheed Sulieman, whom she had skyped with in her Arizona office, and helps him with a neighborhood “hostage” problem. Rasheed takes Ava to the police station. Enroute, Ava convinces Sulieman that what happened to Chris has happened to other Yemeni women. The Sanaa Police unearth their files on missing women whose bodies were never found.
The police track Assam; the group investigates his goat shed and remove some leather objects from it. Ava finds Chris’ silver cross necklace. The police then collect personal items of the disappeared women. DNA testing matches two Yemeni female decedents with Assam’s leather work. Assam is then arrested. After the police threaten to turn Assam over to the Imams, Assam caves in and leads the police to the bodies. As the police and Ava excavate, Assam in handcuffs assaults Ave.
The officers subdue him. Ava revives and unearths Chris’ body. An autopsy finds that Chris died from two stab wounds to the chest. Rasheed Sulieman, asks Assam, in prison, to detail Chris’ murder. Assam admits that he stabbed the killed the American woman, an infidel, and expects a quick release. Rasheed tells Assam that the Imam whose niece he killed knows where he is. Chris’ body is escorted back for re-internment. Ava and Systems Officer James Takai then fly to L.A. to visit the Avendanos and Ava hands Irene (Chris’ mother) the silver cross.
For audiences who love films about mavericks who take on the system, Ava epitomizes the soldier who leaves no soldier behind, and does what it takes to bring Chris home.
