ROGER THAT
By Rick Rozman

GENRE: Sports
LOGLINE:

Roger That is a young, shy, nerdy high school student, living a quiet and lonely life breaks out of his shell and shows his real self, as a freakishly strong student who gets more attention than what he signed up for.

SYNOPSIS:

Movie opens with Roger (teen 18 years old) working out in his basement. Loud heavy rap/hip hop music is playing (huge bass pumping from the speaker.) The kid's face is not shown, but he is lifting heavy weights at a quick pace....low pitch grunt sounds are emanating from him, but kind of in a subdued way (as if the kid does not want anyone to hear it.) He continues working out, adding weight to the bar he's lifting, at an alarming rate.

As he is in the middle of his set, his mom yells down the basement, "Roger, dear, it's time for dinner!" The teen turns down the music and grabs his thick lens glasses sitting on a table next to the weight bench and puts his shirt on. We finally see his face, and, it is a boyish nerdy face, but in the body of a muscle bound man, deceitfully hidden in big sweaters.

Roger is an all A student, who takes all AP classes getting ready to start his senior year in high school. He has scored a 35 on the ACT (only reason he did not get a perfect score of 36 is because he did not want the attention of "the guy with the perfect score" so he purposefully threw some questions to lower his score.)

He has always worn glasses, as his parents have never seen the reason to buy him contacts. He looks nerdy, is extremely shy, and is labeled as just a big brainiac in the school he has attended for the last 3 years. Most people don't know who he is, except for some of the other smart people in his classes. His teachers like him, but want him to participate more, as they know he is gifted (possibly brilliant). Roger is a "normal" kid but carries a lot of hidden rage. There is no particular reason he has this rage. He just knows he feels it.

Roger is 18 years old, and up until now has lived his life as people expected him to live. His parents are good people, not overbearing, and just want good things for him. They know he is smart and has potential to get into a good college and become a doctor, engineer, or computer executive. They know he goes down the basement every night to "exercise", but have no idea how strong and intense his workouts are.

As Roger starts his senior year of high school, football season has recently begun. The guys in the varsity jackets scoff at him and look at him as just another nerd.... a big nerd.

On the first day of school, as the students scramble to their first class of the day/year, Roger heads to the back of class to sit in his customary choice of the back row, out of everyone's attention. It is during this class that the teacher assigns his first homework assignment of the year and "challenges" everyone to do something they have never done before and that is outside of their comfort zone.

Gene listens, but scribbles in his notebook, as if to not pay attention.

That evening, he is browsing the internet and comes across a blog about an underground arm wrestling contest for money-- in a very seedy area of town. Roger calculates the risk vs reward. He's not considering this for the money he can win, but how much he desires to break out of his boring routine life. He tells his parents that he is going to study with a friend. With his backpack in tow full of books and his horned rim glasses on his face, he says goodbye to his parents and off into the night.

He takes an Uber to the seedy bar called “ Bubba’s Bistro” a fine blue collar establishment in the heart of the auto manufacturing industry in Dearborn, Michigan. Roger had prepared for this and had a fake ID stating that his name was Colton Elliott and that he was 22 years old. He shows the bouncer his ID--looks him dead in the eye and is admitted without question. Upon entering, the sound of 1990’s grunge music is blaring loud and people wildly cheering.

He looks around and goes to register himself in the competition.

After 15 minutes, he hears his “name” Colton Elliott” called over the speaker as well as his challenger Billy Bob Porter” a local favorite at the Ford assembly line. Billy Bob is 6’2” and 218 pounds--a former “locally famous” football player at Dearborn Edsel Ford High School--class of 1999. Now 37 years old, Billy Bob is still in great shape and as cocky as ever. Billy Bob and Gene (Colton) approach the table and listen to the rules. Gene’s head is hung low and he can’t meet Billy Bob’s intense stare. Billy Bob looks at young Roger, spits some tobacco into red solo cup and says, “Welcome to the jungle youngtimer.” laughing and staring him down. Roger, without a word or a look puts his elbow up on the table ready to arm wrestle. Billy Bob clasps his hand, getting his advantaged grip with his thumb and wrist curved over Roger’s. This is a veteran’s move over a rookie who has never arm wrestled--almost assuring him of a win. Billy Bob smiles knowing he’s got him. The referee blows the whistle to start the competition.

It’s over almost sooner than it began. Roger slammed down Billy Bob’s arm, hand and wrist so hard that it split open began to bleed profusely. The referee, watching in amazement, grabs a wad of paper towel and hands it to Billy Bob to put over the back of his hand. Roger quietly apologizes and walks away. People cheering loudly watch him and immediately adopt him as their new favorite.

Roger goes on to win the next 7 rounds and is now in the championship. It is him vs Matt “Massacre” Williams-- the undefeated, undisputed, champion arm wrestler of Bubba’s Bistro monthly arm wrestling tournaments. Life is about to change in a big way for Roger. That
