SYNOPSIS:

Genesis

Most family films are not for the family per se: they’re for the kids while parents are merely along for the ride... sometimes with torturous results. But creating a true family film is tricky. It’s got to be something that’s not too adult or too “kiddie”.

For me, a true family film bridges the gap between the generations, allowing each to learn from one another, thereby creating a true bonding experience. The family film is perhaps the only genre that can do this with such effect.

Therefore, allowing a more “adult” viewpoint into the world of children allows for a larger truth and a stronger message. This beats the usual result of theme that feels tacked-on as well as too simple for adults and too complex for kids.

Precedents

The silliness of Freaky Friday combined with the more serious relationship drama of a Kramer vs Kramer.

Pitch

A middle school science teacher is in constant conflict with his son, not only due to the standard generational gap, but complicated by his recent messy divorce. Taking a break from life’s chaos, he comes across the supposed journal of the infamous Dr. Jekyll. He concocts the formula then drinks leading to an odd twist on the usual consequence: he becomes a teenage version of himself.

The teacher decides to use this to connect with his estranged son by pretending to be another kid, “Wolfgang”. It works like gangbusters with the two becoming close friends. However, the stress soon takes a toll on the teacher and, alongside the news of his ex-wife wanting to adopt his son, brings on unforeseen changes. He becomes a “teen rebel” causing a more negative influence on his son.

His Wolfgang persona in danger of taking over, he struggles to find a cure. But when his son decides to run away from home, he agrees to join him. Their disastrous attempt leads to the reveal of Wolfgang’s true identity. Now it’s up to the son to bring his dad back to himself or risk losing him forever.

Amazing Kacee

how is this different than freaky Friday or the other similar movies - same concept

Does that matter? Look at Freaky which just came out. Hollywood repeats itself constantly.
