SERIES SYNOPSIS

Set in Pei Zheng College, English Corner is a faith-based drama about a man teaching American English to Chinese students while thwarting a Canadian teacher and a junior Red Guard officer.

PILOT SUMMARY

God grants the prayer (“Dear God, get me off this sinking ship”) of an embittered, bullied, and burned out corporate coordinator, Maxwell Patton, 52. However, frustrations return over the next two years as he searches for work which has resulted in few interviews and no job offers.

Spiritually deflated, Maxwell puts his faith back in God and accepts an English teaching position in China, yet, if he doesn’t go Maxwell feels he is being disobedient to God. Opening this can of worms even wider Maxwell is married to Ming Zhu, a foreign language high school teacher specializing in Mandarin. Ming Zhu’s reluctance to go with Max means she will be forsaking her own students. Eventually, God gives His blessing and Maxwell departs Chicago, alone.

Halfway between Xiāng Gǎng (Hong Kong) and Guăngzhōu, with heart pounding through his chest, Maxwell’s panic attack sets in when he starts thinking of all the things that could go wrong after the plane lands. So, he makes another simple prayer request, “God you take over.”

As a peaceful Maxwell now stands in the immigration queue, an officer unexpectedly pulls him out as others look on.
