COASTERS
by Jacqueline Marchan
Synopsis
Jennifer and Paul’s relationship starts with playful messages written on the back of bar coasters. He is a handsome bartender, training to become a firefighter, who works in the basement bar of the building where her office is located. Jennifer is a beautiful fashion designer creating innovative textiles and collaborating with the world’s top designers. They have an immediate connection, but he has a secret that keeps Paul from committing to a deeper relationship with her.
The story starts years later, when Jennifer receives an unexpected letter from Paul that takes her back to those bittersweet memories. In the corner of her nightstand drawer is the stack of coasters she saved. She would often pull them out and read them one by one. In spite of her personal turmoil, she soars in her career as a textile designer at DesignTech and takes the company to new heights when her fabrics hit the top runways and designers are lined up to work with her.
While on a solo vacation in Hawaii, she meets Josh Russo who gives her all the emotional connection she longed for with Paul. He is willing to change his life for her, but she cannot bring herself to commit, knowing that Paul resides in her heart. She privately struggles with this triangle of emotions when a tragic accident rips her from her life, and thrusts her into an unexplained coma and mermaid dream state. Their lives go on without her, unaware of her struggle for her very life.
In her dreams, Jennifer lives an idyllic life as a mermaid where she is beautifully fluid and free and happy. Her mind lives in this mythical dream, while her body lies in a hospital bed. Dr. Oliver Martin finds himself at her bedside intrigued by the mystery of her situation and is drawn to her with a depth that he cannot understand. He assigns himself as her guardian of sorts and works to bring her back to the real world where he can know her.
Each man somehow touches the essence of what Jennifer needs, success, passion, connection, and security. But who is really right for her? To Survive, she must confront her past, face the loss, and have the courage to choose life itself.
When the letter from Paul comes, she looks to her past, for both Paul and Josh. She has to search her mind to realize Oliver was with her the whole time when they were not. After almost pushing him away, she finds a coaster Oliver had written to her on the beach that he had flung into the ocean after he found out she was chasing her past. This mystical message at her feet, takes her to her destiny and home.
