A group of police officers trapped in a high-tech building fight for their lives against prototype robots powered by blood and flesh.
SYNOPSIS:
The story begins with a series of real archive footage about the self-sustaining robots developed by researchers from Bristol Robotics Laboratory at the beginning of this century, robots capable of operating by collecting its food from the environment and metabolizing it, thus opening up a future of possibilities.
Now in present day, a police station in Victorville, California, receives an emergency call from a terrified man begging for help and saying that someone is killing them off. Although the emergency call is interrupted, it seems to come from a certain location in Mojave Desert. Three police patrol arrive at the place, a large, dome-shaped building with an impenetrable appearance. The police squad is made up by SHERIFF CASTILLO, 40, a Latina woman with a strong sense of duty whose husband, the former Sheriff, died in the line of duty two years ago; MCPHERSON, 40, the Sheriff’s Deputy, an arrogant man who is envious of her and doesn't like to follow orders; BERRY, 20, a young African-American man with high intelligence and skill but a conspiratorial thinking style; FUJITA, 20, an eccentric, lively Asian-American young man; HOLMES, 30, a tough woman of few words and with an imposing physique; and RUSSO, 30, an unpleasant, rude man and McPherson’s faithful squire.
After receiving a radio call urging them to return - it’s a delicate matter and Swat is on their way -, a sliding double door mysteriously opens on the building’s facade. Led by McPherson and disobeying Castillo’s orders, the officers give in to curiosity and enter the facility. As soon as they begin to inspect the empty lobby, the door closes behind them and they get stuck inside. To make things worse, the lights go out and their radios are disabled by some kind of jammer. As a Swat team vainly tries to access the building, the officers walk into a surveillance room where they manage to restore electricity and find out that the dome is an Army research facility whose staff has mysteriously gone missing. Just after Castillo glimpses some sort of spider-like creature on a monitor, they enter an adjacent laboratory attracted by a strange buzzing noise and discover a pile of twenty bodies, bloody and torn to pieces, of soldiers and scientists. One of them, a dying female scientist, tells them to run away because “they’re coming again”…
From now on, while the Swat teams does everything possible to enter the impregnable building and with the help of a small robot-guide called Benson, the officers will have to face a monstrous court of animal-shaped endoskeletal robots as they look for an exit and try to discover what or who is behind the slaughter.
