Synopsis

Jabari arrives at work full of excitement and motivation. After slapping hands with his arch nemesis Conrad, Jabari heads for the men’s room even though Conrad warned him not to go in there because he’d just taken a dump!

Conrad is seated in his cubicle with his feet up on the desk chatting with colleagues when Jabari enters his cubicle to complain about the foul stench he left behind in the bathroom. Conrad informs Jabari that bringing up his gastrointestinal issues in front of their esteemed colleagues is not HR appropriate. Courtney, the HR rep agrees and asks Conrad if he’d like to file a complaint. Conrad purses his lips and sucks his teeth while looking Jabari up and down. He then states that if Jabari apologizes he won’t file a complaint. Jabari apologizes and Conrad promptly tells him to pole vault his little ass into his cubicle and do some damn work.

Conrad and a group of his co-workers are hamming it up in the cafeteria during lunch when he sees Jabari coming with his tray. The two of them crack jokes on one another then the table falls silent as the gorgeous Denise Gooden enters the cafeteria. Conrad bets Jabari that he won’t go over and ask her out on a date. Jabari accepts the bet before making a bee-line over to Denise. The colleagues watch intently then laugh hysterically as Denise turns Jabari down patting the top of his head before walking away.

The following morning, Jabari’s email notification goes off. Jabari opens an email from Deniselove@email.com to find a photo-shopped image of a woman with Denise’s head on her body holding a newborn baby with Jabari’s head on it. Underneath the photo in big block letters is the phrase, ‘I see you as the little brother I never had’. Slowly, Conrad and the rest of the co-workers pop their heads up over the cubicle wall and bust out laughing.

Jabari enters Courtney’s office and takes a seat in front of her desk. He quickly launches into a defensive explanation of why his numbers are down but she soon cuts him off. Courtney informs him that it’s come to her attention through an anonymous source that he made unwanted advances towards Denise Gooden in the company cafeteria. She wanted to know if Jabari clearly understood the company’s policy regarding sexual harassment. Jabari is incensed as he suspects Conrad is behind this. He is let off with a formal warning.

Stopping outside of Conrad’s cubicle, Jabari finds him sitting comfortably with his feet up on the desk while on the phone. Conrad flashes Jabari a big smile and a peace sign followed by his middle finger. Jabari returns his full bird salute before continuing on to his cubicle.

Jabari pulls into his parking space in front of his townhouse with an awful noise coming from under the hood of his car. His neighbors look on as he exits the vehicle carrying his briefcase. One neighbor complains about his noisy car while the other asks for the money he lent Jabari last week. Walking backwards towards his front door, Jabari offers explanations and reassurances to them only to turn and find a sheet of paper from the utility company taped to his door with the words FINAL NOTICE stamped at the top, sides, and bottom of the page.

Jabari sets his briefcase down on the sofa and presses the playback button on the answering machine. Each of the five messages are from creditors warning of consequences if payment isn’t received soon. With his problems mounting and creditors looming, Jabari takes a seat on the sofa and zones out.

Three hard knocks on the front door jolt Jabari back to reality. Jabari opens the front door to find a big burly Latino man holding a clip board towering over him. He informs Jabari that the bank sent him to repossess the car which he already has hitched to his truck. He asks Jabari if he would like to remove any personal effects from the car. Jabari follows the repo man outside on his walk of shame. The neighbors look and whisper as Jabari removes his things from the car. One of the neighborhood children tells Jabari not to worry because he can ride his bike. The neighbors all erupt with gut busting laughter. Jabari scans the faces of the many men, women, teenagers, and children who are laughing at him. Tears well up in his eyes as Jabari makes his way back inside his home.

At the company Christmas party, Jabari and his date Lenora are seated at the same table as Conrad and Courtney. Conrad asks how they met and Lenora answers that they met on lonelyhearts.com before excusing herself to go to the ladies room. Jabari, fully expecting an avalanche of jokes wipes his mouth, tosses down his handkerchief, and flat out tells his colleagues to take their best shot! Everyone looks at him as though they have no idea what he’s talking about. One by one the couples exit the table and head for the dancefloor leaving Conrad and Jabari alone. Jabari explains to Conrad that he’s fully aware that he’s been made the company’s mascot at his expense and everyone else’s satisfaction. Conrad looks over Jabari’s shoulder and nods his head in the direction of the dancefloor. Jabari turns to see Lenora dancing nasty with one of his colleagues. He walks over to Lenora telling her that it’s time to go but she ignores him and continues dancing as the crowd cheers them on. Jabari leaves the party embarrassed and humiliated.

Jabari walks lazily along the city streets to nowhere in particular. After checking his phone to see that there are no texts or calls from Lenora, he enters a convenience store. He grabs a carton of milk and a bottle of orange juice before heading to the counter. The news anchor on the TV behind the checkout counter is excitedly reporting on the largest lottery drawing in U.S. history! The cashier rings up Jabari’s items asking if that will be all for him? Jabari asks for a couple of lottery tickets and exits the store after paying.

The following morning, Jabari turns on the television to listen to the news while he makes coffee. An excited news anchor reports that the lone winning ticket for the Pot of Gold lottery was sold at the convenience store at the corner of 5th and Lincoln. Jabari realizes that he bought his tickets from that convenience store and quickly checks and double checks his numbers. He is elated upon realizing that he has just won the biggest lottery in the history of the United States of America. Jabari quickly regains his composure staring at himself in the mirror.

Jabari appears on television with the Lottery Commissioner where he is announced as the sole winner to the biggest lottery payout in U.S. history. He smiles alongside the Commissioner while holding the over-sized check for 860 million dollars. Upon leaving the stage, his phone begins to blow up with calls and text messages. Jabari turns his phone off stuffing it into his pocket.

Jabari walks into the office Monday morning as though nothing happened wearing a suit and tie with a doo-rag on his head. His colleagues stare and some applaud as he makes his way to his through the office. Conrad is standing outside his cubicle with a small group of employees chatting about Jabari when he rounds the corner. His colleagues are shocked to see him show up for work business as usual except for the doo-rag on his head. Jabari struts with a new found swagger he’s never had before. The office is buzzing as word that the biggest lottery winner in U.S. history actually showed up for work.

After being summoned to Courtney’s office to discuss his doo-rag not being consistent with the corporate image, Jabari requests to sign up for the health savings plan, employee discount, and free concert and sporting event tickets. He’s on a roll arrogantly rebuffing any and all sudden niceties and sympathetic overtures aimed squarely at his winnings.

Jabari arrives at the office the following day flanked by six large imposing personal security guards. The employees of Reliable Insurance are in awe of Jabari’s security detail. He confidently announces that he’s buying lunch today in the breakroom. Conrad, Courtney, and a group of his colleagues arrive at the breakroom only to find that Jabari has bought lunch for himself and nobody else. Some record with their smartphones while others look on shocked as Jabari is fed then burped like a baby. Conrad exclaims that he ought to be ashamed of himself causing Jabari to call on his security saying that he feels threatened.

The neighbors are all standing around chatting when they notice the sound of a helicopter getting louder and louder. They crane their necks looking skyward to see a helicopter coming in for a rooftop landing on the newly constructed landing pad atop Jabari’s townhouse. Jabari hops out of the helicopter and carefully walks over to the front corner of the roof before jumping onto the spiral slide. The helicopter lifts off and flies away as Jabari reaches the bottom of the slide. His neighbors whisper and jeer at him as Jabari makes his way to the front door.

An impromptu meeting has been called to discuss the behavior of a rouge employee. Gathered around the large rectangular conference room table are Conrad, Courtney, and several of their colleagues. Ryan Douglas sits at the head of the table. They each take turns explaining to Mr. Douglas how their lottery winning colleague has become utterly incorrigible. Ryan Douglas counters saying that Jabari hasn’t violated any company policies and, he recently started an initiative worth two million dollars to provide health insurance to children of low income families in the city. His initiative is good publicity and good business for Reliable Insurance so their concerns will have to wait…for now.

Jabari and a local TV reporter are seated in front of a large picture of Jabari and one of the neighborhood kids. He’s there for a live interview highlighting his Coverage for the Kids initiative. After asking questions about his new initiative, the reporter reads several tweets and emails from citizens suggesting that Jabari isn’t a nice guy and only cares about himself. Jabari attempts to explain away the negative comments from his ‘haters’.

The employees of Reliable Insurance Company are chatting with one another while filing into their seats. Today the Mayor will be giving Jabari the keys to the city. Some one hundred fifty children have been bussed in for the event and photo-op with the Jabari and the Mayor afterwards.

After being introduced by Ryan Douglas, Jabari walks out onto the stage dressed like a diminutive cowboy with glittery gold dollar signs on his vest. During the interview, Jabari describes himself as the Sheriff for the kids because nothing happens to the kids on his watch. The press are invited to participate in the Q&A session with Jabari. The members of the press ask questions about his outlandish behavior rather that his Coverage for the Kids Initiative putting Jabari on the defensive. A woman way in the back calls out that she has a question. The Media Director makes her way up the isle towards the woman who asks if Jabari’s mother raised him to be an asshole.

Jabari is shocked to discover the woman is indeed his mother Eunice. She makes her way down the aisle toward the stage stating that she couldn’t believe the stories she’d seen on the news about her son acting a fool and that she had to come and see for herself. Jabari tearfully tells his mother that she doesn’t know what it’s like to be picked on, bullied, and made fun of. Jabari states that his tormentors are no longer laughing but his mother assures him that they are still laughing, they’re just not laughing in front of him. Eunice Jackson informs her son that the money he won did not change who he is and that he has the opportunity to teach the children something far more valuable than money. Jabari turns to the children hat-in-hand and apologizes for his behavior. He apologizes to his colleagues as well before leaving with his mother.

On the way to the airport, Eunice laughs and tells Jabari that he is exactly like her because she would have done the same damn thing but she felt the need to step in and save him from himself. As the limo pulls up to the curbside check in, Jabari appears to have had a change of heart. Eunice walks into the terminal leaving her son with the skycap who’s standing there with the palm of his hand open waiting for a tip. Jabari slaps him five stiffing him before trotting into the terminal to join his mother.
