With Dalibor in pursuit, the women must flee Bosnia by vehicle, and on foot through a minefield, eventually stopping at a Serb village hoping to find transport. Instead they find Bosnian soldiers have killed everyone, then are re-captured by Dalibor. Milanka uses the atrocity to fool Dalibor into thinking she has changed sides, he agrees to give her a gun to shoot the women as revenge, instead she threatens to kill one of his soldiers unless he lets them go. Thought hey are able to again flee by vehicle, Samira is wounded, and they enter a city to for medical treatment.

The city is besieged by both Serb and Croat forces. To escape they must dodge snipers and the endless artillery. Faced with this seemingly impossible task, rather than have a Serb baby Samira tries to commit suicide by revealing herself to the snipers. Both women turn on Milanka for all the terrible things the Serbs have done to them.

However she is able to get them through city, crawling through artillery blasted ditches at night, and swimming under a small lake as camouflage from snipers in the day. She expresses the shame she feels at what her brother did to them, and they vow to make it across the border together.

Disguised as a Croat POW, Milanka manages to sneak through the Croat lines, taking over a bell tower from the sniper nesting there, she uses his rifle to pin down other sniper's. Finka can now bring Samira out of the city. The women re-group on the other side, but Samira is now having the baby. They flee to Milanka’s old farm house.

At the house Samira gives birth to a boy, then asks Milanka to hold him. She is unable to, admitting that before the war, it was she who killed the Muslim man and not her brother.

Dalibor tracks them to the house, they flee by vehicle, a frenetic chase through forest, then dodging artillery shells to get to the border. Dalibor tries to physically block their leaving, their truck runs him over and they manage to escape.

Airlifted by helicopter, Milanka is able to nurse Samira’s baby.
