SYNOPSIS:
“She’s not possessed. She’s a vessel of murder.”
Theme: revenge, redemption, female disempowerment, west’s decline. Audience: 18+ Tone: dark, lurking danger.
Rooted in theology with a macabre spin on a supernatural thriller and a detective story, Demonical explores the possibility demonic angels walk the earth in a child form. Set present day in Newport, and Maine orphanage once a lunatic asylum.
The series revolves around Rebecca Goldwater, 30, art restorationist, intelligent and sensitive, struggling to adjust going from mortal to celestial warrior. Lacy Waardenburg, Mensa smart and fox clever is a woman, a shapeshifter in the body of a vivacious and likeable nine-year-old; the offspring of Lucifer and Lilith (Adam’s first wife) ordered to kill Eve’s descendants and populate the world with demon children. Other characters: bishop, fortune teller, orphanage superintendent (Azza), orphaned teens, police detective, Rebecca’s husband, Lacy’s protector (Colin).
Demonic Misfits kicks off the series: Hours after a James and Rebecca adopt eight-year-old Colin and Lacy from Wentworth orphanage they are forced to stop at a hotel. Upon orders from Azza to end the ‘golden’ bloodline, Lacy tries to murder Rebecca but fails because of a ‘higher power.’ Now the children are gone, James is missing and Rebecca, on the verge of insanity and being questioned by the police over his disappearance, must prove her innocence and adapt to the extraordinary world she is being thrusts into.
Demonical has legs to go many seasons in a multitude of directions. Season One gets started with Lacy and Azza destroying Rebecca’s idyllic life. Meanwhile, Rebecca seeks to prove her innocence in James’s disappearance, battle her own inner demons while learning she is the sole descendant of Eve blessed with special powers. In Season Two, Rebecca learns her 4th century Bible holds clues to stop Lacy and to destroy a hell-portal within the orphanage. Lacy establishes a demonic incubator. Rebecca attempts to locate Lacy’s parents. Rebecca and police detective become romantic. In Season Three, James returns to find Rebecca pregnant with the detective’s child – a descendant of the ‘golden’ bloodline. Rebecca is pressured to steal a codex Bible from the Vatican. Lacy seduces the police detective. Rebecca witnesses an exorcism.
There is a power to the combination of idyllic New England life and the strange supernatural underpinnings of the orphanage and what Rebecca experiences. This is a serious genre piece, and I want to give the audience a thrill every week with a driving tension and dark humor sprinkled throughout episode. Human and psychological horror play a major factor. No gore or strange CGI. As Carl Jung said, “No tree can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell,” and that’s what I intend to explore through the series, the world in which we live and the darkness and secrets we hide from ourselves, and from others.
