By Aaron C

GENRE: Adventure
LOGLINE:

A young girl orphaned and lost after a terrible war must navigate a treacherous world she knows nothing about full of monsters, magic, and technology in order to find her people.

SYNOPSIS:

ACT ONE

Setup: Waking up in the flaming ruins of a great city, Storm finds herself scared, confused, and alone. Covered in blood and dirt, she gains her feet, staring dumbfounded at the destruction, clearly wondering where she is what happened. She is attacked by a wandering monster and, discovering a terrifying power within her, is forced to kill it. The incident attracts the attention of Pax, a wanderer, but also of the soldiers who destroyed the city. Pax helps Storm hide as the patrol looks for survivors. Pax asks Storm if she can do the trick again on the patrol. Storm can't, so they elude the patrols and hide until night. Sees that she is struggling to remember, so explains what she knows of the destroyed city Danavald and why they may want Storm. She suggests they leave immediately. The Kvian Empire receives word of an escaped survivor. Seeing a video of Storm using her power on the monster, Steyr asks his father the Emperor for permission to destroy the city as an example. The Emperor refuses, and Steyr plots his murder. On the road to Odeilla, where Pax says Storm will be safe, Storm begins to have more memories. Pax explains the Aether, the mysterious force Storm used, and is surprised that Storm doesn't know since she's heard stories of the Danavellir and their power, rare in humans. Pax coaxes her to try on a small but dangerous monster; she fails, and Pax has to kill it. Storm has nightmares revealing more of what happened at Danavald. Sees images of her people using the ability. Images of her mother telling the stories of her people's accomplishments and their responsibilities. More images of destruction, and sees that many more Danavellir have escaped, driving her urge to find them. They see Odeilla in the distance. Relieved, they pick up the pace. Pax says she'll be safe, but can't stay due to other business. Back in Kvia, Steyr has successfully assassinated his father the Emperor. Takes power, and with his first act dispatches airships to obliterate Danavald and make other attacks to send a message. Near Odeilla, Storm and Pax are horrified to see airships on the horizon. Several head toward Danavald, but one splits off and begins attacking Odeilla. Pax offers another solution for safety, but not a very attractive one. The airship departs, leaving Odeilla burning. Storm begins to realize that she has nowhere to go. She must go forward or risk being killed.

ACT TWO

Pax leads Storm away from burning Odeilla, heading for the underground city of Vindhir, a city run by a guild of miners and infested with gangsters. Storm asks if this is where Pax's business is, and Pax explains a bit about the underground cities , the miners guilds, and the gangsters who really run them. They arrive in Vindhir, find a place to eat, and Pax is approached by a Shady Fellow who says Freya Bjorgun has been waiting for her. They are taken to Freya's lair, an upscale casino called The Angel’s Feather in the heart of Vindhir. Introduces Storm and gives a vague account of their journey. Freya wonders why they didn't just stay on the surface. Knows about Odeilla, but catches Pax in the lie, since she had sent Pax to Danavald to retrieve certain items. Discovers Storm is one of the surviving Danavellir. Freya asks Storm about her people. Storm says she has little memory. Freya explains about the Danavellir and their strange power. Asks for a demonstration. Storm puts on a pitiful show using one of Freya's caged pets. Freya explains that her best chance of finding what she seeks would be in Gunnarsholt, a way station where nearly everyone passes on the way to anywhere. She reminds Pax of a deal still unfulfilled, and indicates the enforcers: Ebony Sun assassins. Pax shudders. On their way to rest, Storm asks Pax about the enforcers. Pax explains their methods and their creed. They both agree they never want one after them. Storm begins to wonder why Pax had been able to find her at all. Discovers her deal with Ebony Sun had been to steal items of interest from Danavald for sale on the black market. Pax feels ashamed, but Storm says she had no choice, and chooses to trust her further. Pax vows to help her get to her people. They set out for Gunnarsholt by way of underground roads. Pax gives Storm some background on where they are. They pass through the twin cities of Kil Badhir and Thar Badhir and rest. Pax is recognized as a smuggler, and is forced into a fight. Storm's power comes out again, and they escape, but they are forced along an even more dangerous route on their way to the surface. Ebony Sun agents witness the fight, and the use of Storm’s power, and report back to Freya. Looking to profit, Freya reaches out to Steyr, making a deal to deliver Storm and Pax into a trap. She is specific about getting Pax back, but settles for "dead or alive.” Storm and Pax arrive in Gunnarsholt. They meet Ren Faren, a curious drifter, in a chance encounter. Ren tells them there are no Danavellir in Gunnarsholt, but they have moved on to the fabled city of Reykjavald. Doesn't know why she'd be looking for her people in a rough way station town. Ren offers to help. Ebony Sun springs the trap and captures Storm. Pax and Ren fight, then realize they can do better following and not becoming captives themselves. Storm is taken to Skalaholt and brought before Steyr. Ren and Pax mount a rescue; follow Storm as far as Skalaholt. Ren and Storm break in, cause a stir. They are cornered with Storm. Storm uses her power without thinking; Steyr sees but does not believe. Storm catches sight of him and tries to use her power on him but it is strangely ineffective. Closing in, Storm grabs Pax's strange sword and uses her power through it, surprising everyone. Ren causes a diversion and they escape. Steyr, now intent on capturing Storm and sure of the nature of her power, sets Dante Kane, his most capable general, after her. He is ordered to bring her alive, but her friends are to be killed. Pax takes Storm and Ren to a childhood friend of hers who she says can provide a hiding place. They discuss what Storm did with the sword, and Ren knows what it really is. They decide to set out for Reykjavald. As they depart, Ebony Sun assassins, led by Dante Kane, appear. Dante hands Pax's friend payment. Pax grabs her friend's arm, revealing an Ebony Sun tattoo. They have been betrayed.
