LIZ-AT-LAW

LIZ-AT-LAW
By Douglas Stark

GENRE: Family, Drama
LOGLINE:

Based on a real public defender, Liz-At-Law is about a tenacious woman defending at-risk kids and families in an overburdened court system while also facing her own struggles at home:   a learning and emotionally-challenged nine-year-old and the pain-staking, risky process of becoming pregnant again.

SYNOPSIS:

Liz-At-Law is about a career attorney in the public defenders office covering the San Fernando Valley in Southern California -- her clients range from indigent drug addicts to working class families in crisis to suburbanites with a troubled teenager. Not because it’s her job – it’s her duty, her life’s goal. She has seen first hand the racially-motivated injustices he and his family have faced and, instead of just talking about injustice throughout her progressive upbringing as a girl, Liz takes action at home and in her work as a lawyer. They are locked in an ongoing battle with Max's school to keep him "mainstreamed" instead of transferred to a "special" school, separating him from friends and from a program in which he's thrived. The family picture isn't complete. It's not an easy decision (or process) and Joseph isn't completely on board. This weight, along with the grinding politics of the P.D.’s office and underlying courtroom tensions, reflects the day to day pressure of an often thankless job as well as the sometimes deeply satisfying accomplishment of helping a family in a dark time.
