After suffering a traumatic brain injury, an ambitious music producer can only “speak” in song lyrics, and he must decide if this new affliction is an ability or disability.
SYNOPSIS:
From the rocking intro, anyone can see that Brier Mayes is the coolest, forty-something you’ll ever meet.
He lives with his wife, Kate, and their two little girls, Johnette and Chrissie. Every day, he works as a talented music producer, grinding to find the next big rock artist: the perfect person to help him get that one last Grammy.
Just before his first session with a new rocker, Brier makes a coffee run. That’s when he happens upon an incident between a bully cop and a gritty homeless girl named, Kick. Deciding to intercede, he puts both himself and the girl at risk. After they safely get away, Kick asks for a ride up the street. After he drops her off near the entrance to the highway, he drives off while watching Kick in his rearview. What he fails to see the catastrophic accident ahead. CRASH.
At the hospital, Kate gets the news that Brier has suffered a traumatic brain injury. The surgeon says they will have to wait to see the extent of the damage when he wakes up.
Upon waking in the ICU, Brier is metamorphosed. He has broken bones and a severe head injury. He understands everything that is said to him, but is unable to reply even after he is extubated. Much to his horror, he realizes that when he tries to talk, he can only sing.
The neurosurgeon explains that Brier suffers from "foreign language syndrome," a neurological condition that only gives him access to his first language: MUSIC.
At home, Brier and his family try to adjust to his new condition. Hilarious, heartwarming, and dramatic moments ensue. Problems occur when—despite the sterling efforts of the country’s leading neurologists—his condition becomes permanent.
Because Brier cannot fathom living in this limited capacity, he becomes a broken man. With all hope of recovery lost, he feels that he must unburden his family and leaves Kate and the girls.
Living on the streets as a homeless man, Brier plays songs for money. He literally becomes a HUMAN JUKEBOX. With a little help from his bucket-drumming friend, Kick, and a few other quirky friends, he becomes the street artist known as JUKE.
Juke soon learns that his music has the power to transform those around him. But, when a set of bully cops return to wreak havoc, he is unable to protect Kick from feeling the heat of their wrath.
When Juke goes to see Kick in the hospital, she reminds him that love means having a safe place to fall apart… and it’s not here. He ultimately accepts his fate, amends his mistakes, and finds redemption as Brier... and Juke.
JUKEBOX is dedicated to those who don't always have a voice. It reminds us that life can sing, even if you don’t speak a word.
