SYNOPSIS:

“Culture Shock”

Synopsis: After being abused KESHA finds solace in learning about culture and dance. While dealing with the hurt from her past she decides to channel all of it into dance. With the help of her mom Regina, her brother Derrick, her Grandmother and friends Kima and Anna, they are the key to helping Kesha deal with her past and learn about the wonder rich history of Carnival.

CULTURE SHOCK (CARNIVAL)

ACT I

Abuse is a serious issue that is truly under rated. It is the sole reason many people are lost and confused. Kesha is a young girl that has encountered abuse and like most look for a way to escape the reality of it by channeling it into something positive.

Kesha’s Mother Regina has been abused and her number one priority is to protect her children from going through this. When the family becomes aware of what happened to the children they look for a way to deal with the situation.

With the help of a friend Kesha starts to rebel in order to find an escape from what felt like a prison. Afraid to confide in any adult after know what happen to the last person that abused her she decides to look for an alternate way without any causalities.

ACT II

The introduction to the rest of your life. Kesha felt free and relieved to escape the hell she was living in. Moving away was one of the best things to ever happen in her life. Kesha meet some wonderful, interesting and amazing people that will not only introduce her to a whole new world but will also become her family.

Kesha’s first introduction was to Trinidad and Tobago. Learn the many foods and the history of the culture. Learning to dance to the music and just enjoying expanding her mind and exploring new things. The second introduction was to Mother Africa. The origin, there is not more invigorating than African culture and dance. Although each Caribbean culture has similarities they are different and unique in its own way.

ACT III

The last introduction was to Jamaica, the most popular and accepted of the Caribbean. A lot of people who lack knowledge of these wonderful cultures identify with Jamaica more than any other. Anything Caribbean based they associate it with Jamaica. Kesha learns the difference in each and that for most Caribbean people it is an insult to mistake one for the other.

After all of the teachings and lessons Kesha is now ready for “Carnival”. The line-up for carnival weekend and how to conduct yourself was self-explanatory. It was so exciting and fun Kesha is overwhelmed with joy and fascination, which it completely took her mind away from of the abuse, the hurt the pain and completely redefined her concept of life. Carnival became the best shock of her life!

Characters:

KESHA – young girl who falls in love with Carnival.

REGINA– Kesha’s Mom. After moving her daughter away she hope it helps bring a better life and environment for her children.

DERRICK – Kesha’s Brother, does everything he can to protect his sister.

KESHA’s GRANDMOTHER – Wise and knowledgeable. Teaches her granddaughter to look at life from different perspectives.

KIMA – Kesha’s Best Friend, Becomes friends with the young southern girl and teaches her everything about Carnival.

ANNA – Kesha’s Friend, also is friends with the young southern girl and helps teach her about Carnival.

Film Treatment:

This story is about a young mom who went through a major transition from being married and financially stable to broke and homeless with children. Although most marriages have its ups and downs, feeling like a prisoner is not in the marriage vows. While feeling like she is being shut off from the world and mentally and physically abused Felisha decides after the last assault she’d had enough.

Not knowing what to do Felisha packed her children things and ran to her mom Judy’s 1 bedroom apartment, who gave Felisha a bit of tough love. Not having the room or financial means to help Felisha, Judy advised her daughter if she was really done with her marriage to make some quick and smart drastic changes.

Feeling ill Felisha’s visit to the doctor’s office reveals she is about to be faced with another situation which will cause her to make a decision on something she is strictly against. ABORTION! After speaking with a close friend about going into the shelter Felisha felt that she had no other options available, and she had officially hit rock bottom.

Coping with of being homeless is a task. Being turned away and denied from everything becomes too much to handle and puts Felisha in an emotional state of depression. But with the help of some new strangers inspiring her to get up and do something with her life Felisha begins to process life from a different perspective. Staying focused on goals and avoiding getting caught up in drama becomes Felisha’s #1 priority. After Felisha’s little brush with racism she decided to become more successful than expected of her.

Earning her High School Diploma and becoming a trained administrative assistant was only the beginning of this new love for success. Felisha was hired at the same shelter she once lived in and after her time was up there, she decided to enroll in college.
