A high-achieving autistic professional battles the hidden demands of masking his true self to fit into a neurotypical world. As he prepares for yet another day of conformity, he confronts the unconscious biases that question his place and abilities in the professional sphere.
SYNOPSIS:
"Masks" is a short screenplay that delves into the internal struggle of masking, experienced by an autistic professional named Ethan. Set in the backdrop of a sleek, modern penthouse, the screenplay explores how Ethan must navigate a world of societal expectations, constantly wearing different figurative masks to appear "acceptable" in a neurotypical-dominated professional environment.
Each morning, Ethan faces the pressure to fit into roles that don’t align with his true self. The masks in his wardrobe—each representing aspects of his career, from negotiator to innovator—illustrate the compartmentalization required to be seen as capable. As voices of societal judgment haunt him, Ethan unearths a fractured mask, symbolizing his suppressed identity as an autistic individual.
The story challenges the common misconception that autism limits professional success and exposes the unconscious bias many hold toward neurodivergent people. Ultimately, Ethan rejects the need to mask and decides to embrace his true identity, delivering a powerful message about inclusivity and the strength in authenticity.

As an AuDHD creator, this is a project I hope to find a home for. Born from personal experiences, I wanted to create a conversational piece to bring the conversation of masking, its impacts and the misconceptions to the forefront. As ever, big ideas and no connections but thank you for taking the time to read/rate.
