Succeeding to the throne of England in 1685, the King is keen to turn back the clock to autocratic Catholic rule – only to prompt revolt in church, state, the army, and even his own children in England and the Netherlands, and after a brief but tumultuous reign pave the way for the opposite of what he wanted, the first constitutional monarchy.
