Marriage is a Joke is a romantic comedy about long-time best friends Mike and Lauren (gay male and a straight female respectively) who decide to get married as a joke to celebrate their unique friendship and mock the institution of marriage after their friends harangue them about their lack of focus on their futures. After a ludicrous and very public proposal, Mike and Lauren set out to plan the most self-indulgent and non-traditional wedding possible. The only things that stands in their way are insulted family members, irate vendors, and the men they date along the way who don’t understand their extremely physical and yet somehow platonic friendship. Marriage is a Joke will explore the themes of love, family, and the consequences of always choosing fun over conformity. It’s How I Met Your Mother meets Difficult People.
