By Jeff Mustard

GENRE: Period Piece, Drama
LOGLINE:

In this one-hour scripted, dramatic, historical-fiction, limited series, inspired by real-life events, two immigrant women in NYC Lower East Side in 1902 take on the nation's powerful business monopoly - the Beef Trust, and win. This event not only changes their lives but the course of US history. The "Boycott" gave a voice to women at a time of oppressive patriarchy. A powerful Bechdel and Four-Quadrant friendly series, “Boycott” is the single most important female social activist story that has never been told. It is as timely and poignant today as 119 years ago.

SYNOPSIS:

Series Description

Boycott, the Limited-Series tv show tells the story of two immigrant women who overcame patriarchy, shame, and disdain from their husbands and community. It reveals the extraordinary obstacles they faced to overcome suppression and capitalist aggression include. Prominent themes that serve as the story's moral compass include issues such as Women's Rights, Equality, Female Empowerment, Immigration, Discrimination, Bigotry, and Labor issues — all of these are at the core of the actions that drive the characters - both good and evil, in this series.

The Setting | The Period

NYC, turn of the century 1900, lower Manhattan is bursting with new world activity - the frenzy of industrialization is palpable. The American Dream is in full bloom. Immigrants from across Europe flood the city. A diverse community lives in four and six-story cramped apartments. The mud streets are alive with the bustle of horse-drawn buggies, rail cars, and street peddlers. This is the lower east side; welcome to Ward 10.

The series is supported by a predominantly female ensemble. The story is set in motion when the nation's largest cattle barons, known as the "Big Six" ("Swift" and "Armour" among them), meet and decide to increase the price of meat. Fanny and Sarah, the two female leads, won't stand for it. In a spontaneous moment, they start what became the first spark of a boycott. That spark incited a mob of 5,000 women rallying in the streets.

The Story Engines

Two-story engines drive the series. The first is the incidents leading up to and including the boycotts. Exciting crowd action sequences, primarily women, not just protesting but pillaging and destroying butcher shops. Women have never behaved like this. The show has been engineered around these dramatic high points.

The second story engine is what maintains our interest - the stakes continually rise. The characters' fictionalizations, their competing interests, secrets, and twists, all lurking beneath the surface, drive to a compelling and rewarding climax delivering binge-worthy tv. Conspirators are outed, villains exposed, corrupt police and politicians get their comeuppance.

Four-Quadrant Friendly

Boycott is a rare but highly desirable four-quadrant series. The seven children's storylines in the show, ages 8 - 17, all play a significant role. Their characters' subplots contribute significantly to the series's broad appeal and emotional resonance, as each child emerges as a hero in their own right.
