In a large logistic center, anxious obsolete robotic forklifts, form an offbeat alliance with a straightforward engineer to foil a corrupted manager's plan to send them to a furnace for a sizable commission on each disposal.
SYNOPSIS:
At LLG's (Larry Logistic Group) giant warehouse, amiable robotic forklifts with character, traverse the long aisles in a relaxed setting, as they transport goods from the receiving dock to designated locations.
The robots are named after their model year.
(XXX-95 = 1995 model, XXX-02 = 2002 model Etc.).
Owner LARRY, recently appointed his son-in-law JEFF, as facility manager. New annoying directives initiated by Jeff, put more stress on the robots than ever before, resulting in a faster rate of their breakdown, mainly on the older models. ALI-02, a type of leader for his colleagues, is one of those that tend to fail with increasing frequency.
Jeff's appointment has seen an increase of robots sent to the furnace. Suspicious behavior between Jeff and ADAM, a scrap dealer, is witnessed by the robots. This raises concerns among veteran robots who fear they’ll be sent to the furnace too.
As a result of a series of unfavorable events, ALI-02 attempts irreparable damage to himself. Luckily, his friends stop him.
Jeff doesn't hide his ambition to dispose all the old robots. However, his motives are unclear. This leads to conflict between him and SAMSON, the facility's chief engineer. According to Samson, simple technological steps will allow veteran robots to continue to operate for years to come. Furthermore, Samson assurances Larry to find a solution to the old robots' recurring glitches, which further annoys Jeff.
During an incident in which a few magazines are scattered on the floor, SIM-18 discovers and hides a particular magazine that may be vitally important to Samson and the robots themselves. Samson is manipulated, by the robots, into reading the magazine and as a consequence learns of an inexpensive solution to the robot's frequent breakdowns.
MOSES, the facility's chief mechanic, is a veteran worker. As a matter of fact, Larry hired him as the first employee when he founded the company. However, Jeff confronts him as well. Moses repeatedly fixes the robots, much to Jeff's chagrin. As Moses' work is appreciated and cherishes by Larry, Larry fears his impending retirement.
In Larry's absence, Jeff ousts Moses.
Samson reassures Moses that it's more likely that Jeff himself will be fired.
As tensions between Samson and Jeff grow, Larry makes it clear that only robots that have been declared 'total loss' by Moses can be sold as scrap. Seeing his plans getting delayed, Jeff plots and executes, with Adam, an intentional damage to ALI-02.
The next morning, ALI-02 ceases to operate. Jeff intentionally shuts down the facility so as to create a distraction. In the meantime, Adam transfers ALI-02 to his scrap yard with the intent to drop him in the furnace.
Larry and Samson arrive at the scrap yard and see ALI-02 hanging on a crane above the furnace. Samson's last minute gut feeling manages to turn the events around and save ALI-02.
Larry terminates Jeff's employment. An apprentice mechanic is hired to assist Moses. The old robots are upgraded and the facility resumes its previous tranquility.
