When the accident-prone activities director at a small-town retirement village has yet another holiday mishap, she finagles a handsome new doctor into helping with the Christmas concert, causing a zany clash of lovesick suitors and quirky seniors.
SYNOPSIS:
Emma Klutz, the plucky, overworked activities director at a small-town retirement village, has spent the last three Christmases recovering from silly, snow-related mishaps. Till now she hasn’t missed her choir’s annual holiday concert, a major source of funding for her program. But this year, after spraining her wrist on an icy sidewalk, she’ll have to find a replacement pianist -- or cancel.
Enter affable, soft-spoken Dr. Liam Buckley, who’s filling in for the regular staff physician. Emma goes to Liam after her latest accident and explains through flashbacks how she earned the “Christmas Klutz” nickname. Then, when she discovers he’s a gifted but reluctant pianist, she conspires with the residents to convince him to play for the concert, and later learns the cause of his secrecy.
Meanwhile, “Coach Todd” Crandall, the goofy but loveable physical therapy director who recently dated Emma, becomes jealous of her friendship with Liam. This leads some of the seniors to form alliances for “Team Todd” and “Team Liam,” especially at a rowdy Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest where a tie between them forces a runoff vote.
The main perpetrators of the rivalry are Evan Mendzik, an old gay rascal, and Marques “Spiff” Robinson, a retired ballplayer -- two choir members who are always wreaking havoc around the facility. Despite their antics, Emma finds help and support from motherly resident council president Mariana Flores, another choir member who looks out for her. Likewise, Emma’s steady sister Stacy, who runs the B&B where Liam is staying, counsels her on her budding flirtation with him, as does their grandfather “Pops,” a Santa-lookalike whose favorite saying is “Life can push you in the right direction if you get out of your own way."
In fact, Pops tells Emma through flashbacks about his own Christmas Klutz phase as a youngster, explaining that their grandmother helped him overcome it by teaching him to slow down and enjoy every Christmas
When Emma’s non-binary boss Ray Wickes informs Liam that the staff physician is retiring and offers him the job, word gets around that he’s also considering a promotion back home. A downtown holiday festival then becomes the farce-like tipping point for rumors, jealousies and misunderstandings. And even after their very successful Christmas concert, Emma and Liam still have to chase each other down to try and learn the truth about one another’s feelings, and where they may fit in each other’s future.
A magical moment at the B&B’s piano -- in the very spot where they met -- leads to a happy-ever-after kiss.
At the same time outside, as the carolers wend their way up the street, Todd falls on the ice and is helped up by Pops, who playfully anoints him the new “Christmas Klutz.”
