THE HORROR IN THE OUTER DARK (A POLITICAL SATIRE)
By TJ Barkwill

GENRE: Other
LOGLINE:

Monitoring radio waves for the CIA, a young man from a family with an ancient and dark secret, intercepts a transmission that’s turning people into a bizarre cult and finds himself in a race against time to stop the return of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu and the Great Old Ones, evil interdimensional gods that will spell the end of humanity.

SYNOPSIS:

CAL (22) works in the CIA's Signals Intelligence, monitoring radio waves because that's the kind of thing that might save the USA from... Whatever. Ignoring a warning from his sister, the star-gazing and mildly autistic, SASSY (17), that the stars are wrong, but conceding to her plea that he wear the family heirloom crystal for protection, Cal takes to mooning over the Chinese American MEI (26). His reverie is interrupted by a painful stream of gibberish that suddenly makes sense to him, and he finds himself talking to Cthulhu, High Priest of the Great Old Ones.

As Cthulhu vows to return now that the stars are aligned, Cal snatches off his headset and runs to his boss, Bob. When Bob listens to the channel, he goes crazy and attacks Cal. Cal runs, trying to warn the others, but he's too late in most cases. Luckily, his very hot gay friend RAND (24) has been sleeping under his desk and not been affected. They dash to find Mei and discover her unconscious, having been attacked and knocked down. When Mei recovers, she too has not been affected and they run for safety, only to be stopped by TEP (45), the custodian, who's a North African of regal bearing. Tep shows them that the courtyard outside is now filled with crazies. They stop at the building's lobby.

Worried about his mom and sister, Cal makes plans to get to them as Tep strongly suggests they should stick together.

Meanwhile, Sassy is actually fine and MANNY, a rounded Jewish Marxist DARYA, and the athletic Native American MAGA hat-wearing tom-tom drums.

When they get off the main road to let the crazies pass, Sassy sees a pulsating green star in the sky: Xoth, home of the Great Old One Cthulhu. To Sassy, it just spells trouble. As you'd FINN, at a party in those same woods tonight.

Tep reveals that he's not just a custodian, he was a lecturer at Miskatonic University, and he's here because he's secretly been searching for the "router" that has been planted in this building. It's the router that's allowing Cthulhu's signal to reach people. He asks to see the blueprints for the building, to search for the router, which, he reveals, in previous incidents has been in the form of a statuette.

Cut off from the Comm Center offices, Mei uses the terminal in the lobby to log in and call up shit has probably hit some kind of fan.

At Cold Springs Wood, Sassy and the kids see the Crazies now calmed and flocking to a clearing in which four sacrificial victims have been hoisted on wooden poles. Sassy, calls her brother and tells him he needs to get over there. QUICK.

Cal, however is venturing down into the hole that's been blown through the server room floor into the cavern below, in which they find a statuette of some terrifying creature (Cthulhu)... The router. Mei tries to smash it without any luck. Nick tries to pick it up and is burned as Tep warns them not to touch it since only those from the dimension of the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods can interact with it (a matter/antimatter thing). He says only Cal can touch it. Which raises some eyebrows.

When Tep hears of Sassy's call and the scene she At the woods things are heating up, and some guys in robes and scary masks start up an invocation that raises Cthulhu's children from their resting places... Hideous beings of immense size. The Great Old Ones may be gods, but they look a lot more like nightmare dinosaurs.

Things don't look good for the sacrificial offerings. Except, Yas sneaks up to the pen that's holding the other offerings and starts to free them all. Manny goes to help.

With Cthulhu's children now all returned, they offer up a howling screech that opens the door between dimensions and the much-more-horrifying-in-person-because-he's-HUGE Cthulhu steps into this world from his resting place in R'lyeh.

Cal and the gang arrive. As the kids set about freeing the sacrifices on the poles, Cthulhu recognizes Cal and they speak with Tep nearby.

As they do so, half of the crazies throw off their current robes to reveal robes and masks of a different color, and these guys start up their own invocation which draws down from the depths of space: Hastur, Cthulhu's brother and mortal enemy, another gigantic beast. Hastur kills one of Cthulhu's children.

Hastur and Chulhu fight. It's not very godlike, but what is?

Hastur victorious.

Dying before them, Cthulhu asks Tep (whom he calls Nyarlathotep - one of the Outer Gods) to save his children, and Tep turns them into human form and immediately vanishes and hides them.

Hastur bellows and Tep tells Cal this is the moment he was born for. Sassy points to his crystal. Cal throws it at Hastur and the creature is immediately sucked back up into space.

With Cthulhu gone, all the crazies go back to being themselves.

In the aftermath, Cal asks Tep what just happened. Tep tells him the world and humanity, of which he is the custodian, have been saved. Mei confirms that while this is true, Hastur will come back at some point to find and kill Cthulhu's other children. Tep reveals that this is the game that keeps the blind idiot god, the almighty Azathoth amused. And it's only by keeping him amused that humanity gets to exist.

Cal storms off, but Mei calms him down, and he finally plucks up the courage to ask her out on a date.
