BIRDS OF PARADISE
By Carl Burcham

GENRE: Fantasy
LOGLINE:

On secluded Paradise Island, Scarlet, a stunning, spirited winged woman falls for the alluring, shipwrecked Thack, but when he and his colleagues conspire to prevent her and her winged sisters from ever flying again, a brutal battle of the sexes erupts that will forever change their lives.

SYNOPSIS:

In the cockpit of a helicopter racing over the South Pacific, Fiji Flight School instructor Janus shares a compelling story with his student, Sebastian.

After their ship KISMET crashes in a tropical storm, THACK and his colleagues MANNY and ALEC wash up on an uncharted atoll they christen Paradise Island. For weeks, three exotic winged women they name SCARLET, MACKIE and RAINBOW visit them. Warily, the women flirt and flap and fly above but never near enough to talk to or touch. Though the island is uninhabited by other humans, it is bursting with colorful birds, flowers, and a few strange creatures. One morning, fire-breathing dragons attack the men. In an epic sky battle, the women rescue them, kill the dragons, and fly off. For weeks, they do not reappear. Then one day while Manny is swimming, the women save him from an attacking Great White shark. Embarrassed for being rescued twice by the women, macho men Manny and Alec decide there is only one way to get closer to them—capture. Thack is uncomfortable with the conspiracy and wants no part of it.

With jewelry, gold, and colorful charms from a hidden trunk they discovered aboard KISMET, Manny and Alec “bait” the women and gain their trust. They lure them into a storage building that holds more treasures. Now joined reluctantly by Thack—the men capture the women and shear off their wings. Ultimately, the women accept that they will never fly again. Because their feet are weak (when they had wings, they rarely walked), they become dependent on the men. They learn English and do what the men call “women’s work” – cleaning, cooking, and caring for the men. Despite this, Mackie falls in love with Manny and Rainbow with Alec. The couples marry in a dual ceremony. Though she has also grown to love Thack, the independent Scarlet cannot say yes to his many proposals of marriage. “One day I will,” she promises. Children are born to the married couples— two boys without wings and a winged girl, Angel, an adventurous flyer.

When Manny and Alec announce that they plan to shear Angel’s wings when she turns 18, the women—led by Scarlet—rebel. Every day, after the men have traipsed off to one of their many projects, Angel and the women learn to walk. And run. One day at dusk, they initiate the rebellion. They inform the men they will leave them forever if they shear Angel’s wings. Manny and Alec say no. Thack, disgusted by his colleagues, declines to take part. But, because the men neglected to do an annual shearing, the women’s wings have grown back! So, the women keep good on their promise, fly away, and take the boys with them. A tropical cyclone hits. The men are destined to perish. Once again, the women—along with Angel—come to their rescue. Swooping down, they carry the men to safety. Finally, the men see the errors of their ways; they agree to let Angel keep her wings and to no longer prevent the women from flying. Now…Scarlet agrees to marry Thack. Nine months later, they have a child. It is a boy, and it has wings! Tragically, Scarlet dies giving birth.

The helicopter approaches Paradise Island as Janus finishes the tale. Sebastian wonders how Janus knows so many details. His reply: “Because I’m Scarlet’s son. The first boy with wings. And Paradise Island is my home.” He jumps from the copter, waves to Sebastian, and joins a flock of others like him with wings. Janus leads them in a precise V-formation as they soar over Paradise Island and out of sight. Sebastian spins the copter around and heads back home to Fiji.
