By Kjell Hammerø

GENRE: Thriller
LOGLINE:

When Malcolm gets accused of murdering his wife, he must prove his innocence and gets tangled up in a conspiracy involving the smuggling of weapons and backers in the weapon industry.

SYNOPSIS:

Malcolm, a former Special Forces soldier, lives in a small town where he works as an instructor training people in the use of rescue floats. He leads a quiet life with his two children and his wife, Anne, who works as a National Intelligence Officer. One day Malcolm finds Anne brutally murdered in their home.

Malcolm gets charged with the murder but gets acquitted during the following trail due to weak evidence. After this Malcolm’s children cuts all contact with him. They are convinced he killed their mother. Malcolm’s life falls apart.

Four years later: Malcolm has established himself in a major city where he works as a security guard at a dockside warehouse. The last four years has taken a toll on him, and he is worn down. He has a new girlfriend, Theresa, who also works at the harbor with logistics on container-freight.

One night he finds Theresa shot and killed amongst some of the containers at the harbor. Malcolm panics, and his first thought is that he will be charged with murder again, but this time he will for sure be convicted. He hides her body.

Malcolm begins questioning his own sanity. Could he have killed them both but just can’t remember it? Still, he manages to keep his calm, not revealing anything to his surroundings while he’s trying to figure out what’s going on.

Four Intelligence Officers pretending to be a part of a military operation enters the dockside warehouse. They claim to be there to fix a secret military cable at the harbor.

Malcolm gets suspicious of their ruthless behavior and finds it strange that they have entered the harbor at the same time he found Theresa killed.

Through his co-worker and trusted friend, Alex, Malcolm learns that there is a container somewhere at the harbor loaded with smuggled weapons that originates from the conflict in Ukraine. They are supposed to be smuggled to Somalia, ending up being used in the Somali Civil War. Alex has been assigned to guard the container, but the container has vanished. Malcolm suspects that the military operation is a cover-up to find the missing container.

He finds out that there is a connection between the murder of his wife and the murder of Theresa. They both came to close to an illegal weapon smuggling operation done by the same corrupt Intelligence Officers, and they both got killed for it.

Malcolm decides to go after the four corrupt Intelligence Officers and to stop the smuggling operation. He sees the opportunity to get cleared of the suspicion of murdering his wife so he can reunite with his children and get his life back. He is also driven by a motive of revenge.

The four corrupt Intelligence Officers have found out that Alex is good friends with Malcolm. They suspect that Malcolm is cooperating with Alex and that he has something to do with the disappearance of the container. They go after the weakest link first – Alex. They lure him into the dockside warehouse at night. After interrogating and torturing Alex, they get no good answers.

They get Alex to contact Malcolm, luring him into the dockside warehouse as well. They are now convinced that Malcolm is responsible for the disappearance of the container. And they must find the container during the night, to avoid involvement from the police, and before the backers in the weapon industry realizes that the operation has gone awry.

Malcolm suspects that he is being lured into a trap. He sneaks into the harbor area, without the corrupt officers or Alex knowing he is there. From now on, Malcolm knows that he alone must stop the corrupt officers.

His first confrontation turns out to not be against the four corrupt officers, but against “The Cleaner”; a hitman working for the backers of the weapon industry. Malcolm gets the upper hand and learns from “The Cleaner” that the backers in the weapon industry already knows that the plan has gone awry. “The Cleaners” mission is to kill the four corrupt officers. The officers have taken too many chances over time, and they now represent a risk for his employers.

Through “The Cleaner” he also learns that the weapon industry itself benefits from these kinds smuggling operations. Smuggling of weapons extends conflicts in war zones, and thereby increases the weapon industries profit. “The weapon industry never loses a war; they only lose when it’s peace”.

From now on, Malcolm and “The Cleaner” see the benefit of working together. They go their separate ways, hunting the officers down. They manage to kill three of the officers. While “The Cleaner” starts searching for the missing container, Malcolm ends up confronting the corrupt Intelligence Officer who killed his wife. Even though Malcolm gets seriously wounded in the fight, he manages to kill him.

But the backers in the weapon industry are too strong. “The Cleaner” finds the container. Malcolm doesn’t manage to stop the smuggling operation, and the container leaves the harbor on a ship, heading to Somalia.

“The Cleaner” wants to erase all traces of the operation. He starts searching for Malcolm. “The Cleaner” almost finds Malcolm hiding, but morning approaches. “The Cleaner” has to stop the operation before a new workday starts at the dockside warehouse. He leaves, and Malcolm, barely alive, also manages to get out of there.

Malcolm proves his innocence to his children. He wins “the battle”, but “loses the war”.
