AGNES & MIA

AGNES & MIA
By Camilla Roman

GENRE: Crime, Family
LOGLINE:

To find Leo’s murderer, detectives Agnes and Mia have to look to the past, to find out the truth about their parents.

SYNOPSIS:

In the tight-knit community of Bishop, California, detectives Agnes and Mia (both 45) are drawn into a murder investigation when the body of Leo, a social worker from their past, is found by the lake. With Leo once serving as big brother figure during their troubled teen years, the duo is determined to find his killer.

As they delve into the case, flashbacks to their teenage years in the late '90s reveal a turbulent past. Agnes’ father, Pastor Andersen (who’s Norwegian), and conservative mother, Ann, does not accept her sexuality. At 16 Agnes seeks refuge in a group home where Leo works. Here she meets Mia, whose mother, an illegal immigrant, has disappeared.

Agnes is now married to Viv and raising two adopted daughters. When child protection service shows up, Agnes knows it’s her own mother’s doing, still not accepting Agnes’ way of life, and decides to confront her. Ann is the Mayor of Bishop, a powerful figure in town, running for governor.

Mia is struggling to move on from her divorce ten years ago, secretly keeping tabs on her ex-husband's life. Mia’s way of coping is gardening and drinking and picking up guys in bars. One night she meets Matt, who is interested in more than just one thing, but is Mia finally ready for a new relationship?

As the investigation takes them to Los Angeles, they join forces with their old friend Diego, an FBI agent, to uncover Leo's involvement with an organization aiding illegal immigrants. Their pursuit of the truth unveils a sinister connection between Leo's murder, Ann's political ambitions, and long-buried family secrets.

Turk, an enigmatic Native American tracker, becomes a key ally, pointing the detectives towards Ann and her right-hand man, Norman, an ex-military with shady friends. The investigation intensifies as Agnes becomes convinced that her mother played a role in Leo's death, and that the child protection service is a way to distract her from the case.

The narrative takes a dangerous turn as Ann, desperate to protect her political aspirations, reveals a dark history involving Mia's mother, Maria. Leo's knowledge of these secrets becomes a threat, leading Ann to make a ruthless move to silence him.

To expose Ann and bring justice to Leo, Agnes and Mia must confront truths about their own past, leading to a shocking revelation - they are sisters. With the unexpected help of their father, Pastor Andersen, who’s had enough of living a lie, Agnes and Mia navigate the perilous path of exposing a powerful and dangerous adversary.

In the explosive finale, as the layers of deception unravel, Agnes and Mia find strength in their newfound sisterhood and an unyielding determination to see justice served.
