An intimate view of the toll that celebrity and the Hollywood machine take on family seen through the complex character of comedian Jerry Lewis and his rocky relationship with his son, Scott Lewis.
SYNOPSIS:
About a decade ago, Scott Lewis – the third of Jerry and Patti Lewis’ six sons – reconnected with his childhood friend, Urs Jakob, and asked him to help tell his story. Behind the façade that comes with growing up the child of celebrity, in a fantasy land disconnected from the realities of the world, Scott relays a family life shaped by abuse that haunts him into adulthood, and the burning questions that have plagued his life:
Did my father ever really love me? And, did my father sabotage my career and keep me from the success I deserved?
HOUSE OF LOVE employs a library of Jerry Lewis’ clandestine audio and video recordings, decades of images from the family archives, and passages from intimate letters and journals to weave together the complex tapestry of Scott and the Lewis family. Peeling back layer after layer, Urs realizes that there's more to Scott's story than meets the eye, and that challenging Scott's questions would take us down a convoluted path to truth.
Armed with the Lewis family and friends’ memories, notions, conversations, and contradictions, the project set out to discover who Jerry Lewis really was, the impact of celebrity, the intricacies of the entertainment industry, and where that left the Lewis family.
By fade to black, the project challenges us to reflect on our own values and understanding of love, family, and identity, asking us: at what point must we accept responsibility for our own lives.
