An Amish boy on his Rumspringa tries to find his place in the outside world as he explores the city of Chicago. With his newfound best friend by his side to show him the ropes, there is no way he could go back to what was; but he quickly learns that not everything is peachy in this modern society.
SYNOPSIS:
Abram Fisher lives in Arthur Amish Country, Illinois. He is part of the Amish Mennonite community, where he lives with his father, Jacob, his mother, Betty, and his younger siblings, Lehi and Annie. Since his fifth birthday, when his parents took him to celebrate outside his community, Abram has been fascinated with the outside world. He felt like he was missing out on something big.
Now, sixteen-year-old Abram is ready for his Rumspringa. Jacob, on the other hand, is against it, reminding Abram that he is where he belongs… but Abram seconds that. Abram manages to convince him. Before he leaves, he says goodbye to his childhood friend Adaline, whom Betty always believed was meant to be her daughter-in-law.
Abram catches a ride to Chicago with a guy who introduces him to podcasts, rap, and some deep conspiracy theories. Upon arriving in Downtown Chicago, Abram walks the streets... taking everything in. He goes to a bodega to buy some snacks; there, he meets Dante Morris. Dante, 18, is a young, outgoing African American man. To make a living, he does all sorts of errands, including food delivery, painting people’s bedrooms, and custom-designing sneakers. Because of that, he is popular amongst his friends and his block.
Abram takes a liking to Dante's charisma and personality. He asks him for a ride to a motel nearby, and Dante agrees. Once there, Abram is told he can’t book a room as he is underage. With nowhere to sleep, he asks Dante if he could stay with him. Dante knows it won’t be easy to convince his parents, Lamar and Georgia. Abram offers to chip in with the expenses and asks him to be his tour guide during his stay. Dante agrees.
When Dante introduces Abram to his parents, he lies that he is a friend of a family friend. His parents are not buying it, he finally confesses. Abram promises to be a good guest and not cause any trouble. Georgia is open to hosting him, but Lamar is still hesitant... even doing a background check on him.
The pair visit museums, eat deep-dish pizzas, visit skyscrapers, and more. Dante helps him get settled, buying him a phone, a wardrobe change and opening a bank account. Abram is convinced this is where he wants to be. There is no reason to go back. Dante also introduces him to Gabe, a quiet and very introverted friend from high school. Abram and Gabe hit it off, sharing their interests as bookworms. They become quite close… even bringing Gabe out of his shell.
One night they attend a party for Dante’s friend Astrid. Abram is immediately smitten by her. As the money is drying up, Abram gets a job at a fast-food restaurant with Dante. Coincidentally, Astrid works there. Abram and Astrid become close as they work together; there is chemistry. Abram finally musters up the courage and asks her out… she says yes.
After seeing how close Dante and Abam are, Lamar takes a moment to discuss the experience of being a black man in America with Abram. He asks him to look out for his son and never do anything to put Dante in danger. Abram reassures him he would never compromise Dante’s safety. Lamar finally lets his guard down, treating Abram like a second son. He even teaches him how to drive.
A year has passed, and Abram’s life has never been better. He has a girlfriend, and he was recently promoted to assistant manager, with two best friends and a second family. Life is great… but there are moments where he misses his old life.
Astrid is assigned to train Braxton, a new employee. Abram is alarmed by her flirtatious attitude with Braxton, Abram brings it up with her, but she assures him there’s nothing behind it. From then on, Abram becomes overly possessive and jealous… causing a strain in their relationship.
Preoccupied with his own worries about Astrid and Braxton, Abram neglects Gabe’s request for an important conversation he wants to have. Gabe pleads with him to spare a moment, but Abram is too focused on his own problems to hear him. He promises they will have a talk at the Morris barbecue the day after.
The Morris hold a Fourth of July barbecue, and family and friends attend. Gabe and Astrid are missing, leaving Abram glued to his phone, trying to get a hold of her. Abram meets Dante’s other family members; it’s a grand time. Dante sees messages on Dante’s phone from Gabe asking him to pick him up. Abram has ignored them. They decide to pick him up after getting some ice from the gas station.
When they arrive, Dante goes inside as Abram pumps gas. He sees Astrid and Braxton holding hands as they get to their car. Abram confronts them, which leads to a fistfight between Abram and Braxton. Dante tries to break them up but ends up being the one in the cuffs when a cop shows up, and Abram is afraid to confess that he is to blame. Lamar and Georgia are notified by the gas station clerk who calls them. Later, Dante is freed when a bystander shows his recorded video of the incident. Abram realizes he broke his promise to Lamar; he is kicked out of the Morris home.
The morning after, while Abram is packing his belongings, he gets shocking news…. Gabe committed suicide. While in Gabe’s room, his mother discovers some recordings from his phone. Gabe was being sexually abused by his stepfather for quite a while. After she thrashes him with a baseball bat, her husband is arrested.
Abram is granted a few days to stay until Gabe’s funeral. After the funeral, Abram leaves without saying goodbye to Dante or his parents. He arrives back in Arthur country.
When Abram and Adaline reunite, she announces her engagement to a mutual friend. Adaline confesses her shock upon hearing about his return, stating that she felt he wouldn’t come back. Abram also announces that he wants to get baptized and officially join the church. Later, he also shares the news with his parents, who are elated. After a few days back, Abram starts working with his father in construction in the meantime before he figures out his next step.
Back in Chicago, Dante is on house lockdown. Lamar will not let him go out for any reason after what happened. Dante is miserable, with all free time on his hands. He finds an arts program at a nearby college he takes an interest in. He had taken a gap year after high school to figure out what he wanted to study, but Lamar was against him pursuing something in the arts. Dante notifies him that he is going for it.
After months of mandatory classes prior to the baptism, the day arrives. Abram and some other members are officially inducted into the church. The day ends with a beautiful surprise … with the Morris family attending the dinner after the baptism. Dante and Abram are reunited, Abram apologizes to the Morris…Lamar has already forgiven him. The day ends with everyone seated at the table as Jacob asks Lamar to say the blessing. Abram is finally content and knows he is where he belongs.
