When household rubbish begins to fall from the sky and into their garden, an environmentally conscientious homeowner must deal with the consequences of this mysterious phenomenon.
SYNOPSIS:
A well-organized bedroom with a minimal design. A single bed covered in white sheets is occupied by someone. An alarm clock chimes. It reads: "06:00". ELAINE (female, 30's, controlled and educated) stretches as she happily wakes up.
Elaine uses eco-friendly products as she washes herself. She strains loose tea leaves to create a cup of tea. She begins to hum a perky tune as she empties two filled recycling bins. She turns to the black bin in the dark corner half filled with general waste. She empties the bin with an air of guilt. She takes the tied bin bags to the front of her front garden where she sees her next door neighbour, FAZ (male, 30's, bearded, lethargic, and carefree) at their bins trying to fit an oversized cardboard box into the general waste bin. Elaine marches over to him and lectures him on the correct way to dispose of household waste. He is unimpressed and tells her to go home.
Alone in her kitchen, Elaine notices something in her back garden. She goes outside to take a closer look, revealing a large pile of household rubbish. She is confused about its origins but disposes of it nonetheless.
That night, she sleeps peacefully when a clatter comes from outside. As she wakes up to the morning sun, she stretches with a smile on her face which falls flat at the sight of another pile of rubbish in her back garden. She cleans the mess up and blames it on kids playing a prank, thinking that everything will be okay tomorrow. The next day, she stands in front of three large piles of rubbish in her back garden.
Elaine places the bin bags into her over-filled collection bins when Faz makes a comment about her level of over-consumption. Elaine probs him for information about the occurrence of rubbish in her garden and claims to find the culprit of the fly tipping.
That night, Elaine hides behind a bush in her back garden, dressed entirely in black. Movement in the night sky catches her attention. A grey blob grows larger. Something is falling toward her. She rushes out of its path just in time to avoid the multiple piles of rubbish forming in her garden. She walks towards one of the piles seeing a letter Faz's name on it.
The next morning, Elaine confronts a bewildered Faz, blaming him for littering in her garden. He accepts no responsibility, which enrages Elaine onto a path of insanity. She enters her house and furiously stirs a mug of tea. As she talks to herself, she entertains the idea that rubbish can indeed fall from the sky and takes to the internet in search of answers. No answers appear. Instead, she places 'No Littering!' signs in her back garden, thinking that this is the solution to the problem.
The next day, Elaine stands in front of five piles of rubbish in her back garden. She screams and hits the piles with one of her signs. Elaine takes the rubbish to her collection bins and begs a waste disposal truck to take the extra bags away. They state that they can only take what is inside of the bins and that she will have to take the additional bags to the tip herself.
Defeated, the truck leaves, and Elaine heads to her front door when a small pile of rubbish falls to the ground in front of her. She turns away from the sight, rushes inside, and closes the door. Rubbish falls down her stairs. She tries her best to ignore the increasing amount of rubbish, which is challenging to do when she tries to go to the toilet, cook dinner, and watch TV as piles of rubbish appear all around her. It is especially hard to ignore when a small boat crash lands into the roof of her garden shed.
Elaine phones the Police, explaining her situation and asking for help. The call operator ignores her story as a prank call. Elaine hangs up the call and screams. She rests on the table as the sound of falling rubbish can be heard. She turns her head with glaring eyes to see a new pile of rubbish. Something snaps inside her. She shoves all of the rubbish on her property into bin bags and throws them into the front gardens of her neighbors. Bags split as she throws them, spilling rubbish onto the cut grass.
Pleased with her actions, Elaine rests on her sofa with a small grin when vigorous knocking comes from her front door. She opens the door, revealing a crowd of displeased neighbors. She confronts them with blissful ignorance. The crowd erupts in anger. Elaine quiets them with a shout before proceeding to lecture them on her predicament, responsible consumption, and their accountability in this mysterious situation, pointing out that nobody cares about how their own actions affect others. The crowd looks at each other with confusion, shakes their heads, and leaves. Elaine believes that their behaviours will change and that this is the solution she was looking for. She talks to the sky, saying as much.
Happy with herself, Elaine makes a cup of tea when more rubbish falls in her back garden. Elaine drops her mug.
Elaine sits opposite an estate agent negotiating the sale of her house and the purchasing of a new one.
Elaine stands outside of a new house. Behind her, a removal truck with all of her belongings is parked. Neighbors greet her with kindness. She looks to her quaint new house with delight. A large pile of rubbish falls to the ground in front of her.
