By Craige Cronin

GENRE: Western, Mystery
LOGLINE:

A bank robber makes a desperate bid for freedom, hides out on a ranch, but finds himself championing a poor senorita whose cattle are being mutilated through supernatural means... or so it seems. (Screenplay and Novella).

SYNOPSIS:

New Mexico. Jesse Lomax is a bankrobber. Involved in a desperate bid for freedom, he is the only survivor of a hold-up gang. He escapes to an isolated ranch, and knowing the law is searching for him, seeks employment as a hired hand.

Jose and Elle Degas, father and daughter, are only too happy to take him on, even though Elle strongly suspects their new employee is not all he seems. But their need is greater, as they face bankruptcy due to a series of mysterious mutilation attacks devastating their small herd. Jesse and Elle strike a deal. She will allow him to 'lay low' without turning him in, and he agrees to stay until the cattle reach market.

But Jesse doesn't realize what he is in for. He finds himself guarding the herd through long freezing nights, and is almost killed when a steer plummets from a clear night sky, landing right beside him.

Jesse can't understand why the authorities will not help. Only trouble is, Jesse is not all that bright. After trying his level best with the Livestock Board and local news, he writes to a paranormal investigator. Here, he finally strikes pay-dirt.

Bill Banks is a lawyer from Colorado whose rancher clients suffered similar attacks to their cattle. A sheriff friend of his tried to warn him off, only to die under mysterious circumstances. Sensing a government cover-up, Bill dedicates himself to visiting ranchers who have suffered cattle mutilations.

Between Jose's dry humor, Bill's suspect sexuality, Elle's ailing romance with a sheriff, and Jesse's dumb attempts to help out, the mystery is all-but solved. An official investigation is launched, and Jesse and Elle escape to a new life.
