FEARLESS

FEARLESS
By Craige Cronin

GENRE: Thriller
LOGLINE:

A telemarketer uses information from phone surveys to choose single women he can rape and murder. Detective Max Steele, two months from retirement, is assigned to what he sees as a hopeless case. (Screenplay plus Novel).

SYNOPSIS:

Telemarketer, Martin Lake, works for Mako-Jefferies, a tele-survey company in a large

city. Martin uses his job to glean the snippets of information he needs to locate a specific type of victim. She must be young, single, and living alone. Martin has another advantage - he has a relationship with one of his supervisors at Mako-Jefferies - Marsha.

Martin’s MO is demonstrated when he rapes and murders a surveyee – Kathy.

Shortly after, Max Steele, a recalcitrant old cop about to retire, is given the case. The

police department is undermanned and Max’s case load is already too high. At the murder site he is joined by Sid Travolta, a rookie detective assigned to help him. Max’s appraisal of the situation is that they have a clever opponent on their hands, and much to his distaste he advises they will have to just go through the motions – the department has to concentrate on crimes it can solve. Max concludes the killer likes to take extreme chances.

Meanwhile, Fred, a fellow detective, similar in appearance and vocal abilities to Martin, works in the next office to Max. His job is to track down cop-killers. He is a strange, moody character and has a habit of disappearing from work just prior to each killing - purportedly to study part-time at college.

Mickey Beringer, an office delivery boy, is also similar in age and appearance to Martin, and he is constantly watching Max. Both men could be the killer.

Martin’s next victim is a woman called Sonja. A rape victim in her childhood she

manipulates Martin into letting her go. Fascinated by her, Martin returns to observe her from afar. Meanwhile Sonja learns that her sugar-daddy has placed her in a vulnerable position as the fallguy in a money-laundering operation, so she designs a clever way of murdering him.

Keeping her under surveillance, Martin records the murder. He snatches the body, left

floating in the pool at Sonja’s mansion, and hangs it from a tree in Central Park. This compels Max and Sid to investigate the murder, which leads them to Sonja’s door. She cleverly throws the blame onto Martin, as Marsha (his love-interest supervisor at work) witnessed him copying down her details and informed her that he did so. Now with a real lead the detectives go to Mako-Jefferies, but too late discover that Marsha has already been murdered and Martin is gone. But they now have a definite suspect.

They go to Martin’s house only to find it vacated. Finally the murderer is revealed. Sid, Max’s supposed new partner, reveals to Sonja that he is Martin, and blackmails her into being his associate. Smitten with her, he seals the deal by giving her a signed confession, trusting her as she must now trust him. (Sid/Martin was able to

carry off his deception with Max through stealing the identity from a cop he previously

murdered - a victim on Fred’s list of cops killed. But Sonja is not playing Martin’s game. She calls Max and in a showdown he kills Martin.

About to retire, and with an ailing wife who desperately needs a life-saving lung operation, Max does a deal with Sonja. He will let her go in return for half the proceeds from the sale of her mansion. He sees her off at the airport and we suspect that this old, faithful cop has finally been corrupted. But at the last moment we learn he has outfoxed her. He tipped off INTERPOL about the money-laundering operation still in her name, and true to form, Sonja could not resist the temptation of the cash.

Max retires to a tropical Island and is able to save his loving wife by giving her the

operation she needs. Sonja goes to jail.
