A sociable, outgoing Silicon Valley techie's search to find his long lost brother becomes a journey leading to answers that could bring about his own death.
SYNOPSIS:
Doppelganger is a mystery/suspense crime drama about a Silicon Valley video game developer, Matt Dawson, who decides to quit his high paying job after finding his girlfriend and co-worker Susan Nolan cheating on him with his boss Tom Wittworth. In response, he decides to move to a small town on the Oregon coast, Pine Grove Beach, for the summer to find a new direction in his life and complete a video game he has been working on. Before arriving in Oregon, Matt visits his parents in Northern California to reconnect and provide some reassurance that he's okay.
After moving to a supposedly "quiet" peaceful oceanside community with his faithful black lab Miles, Matt becomes embroiled in a major conspiracy perpetuated by the town's government officials that puts him in grave danger. While most of the residents are friendly, for some reason a number of them react to him in a very awkward manner. The leader of the conspirators, Chief of Police Bill McNaulty will go to any measure to conceal the conspiracy and the ill-gotten financial gains that Matt now jeopardizes in the minds of the conspirators.
Matt does befriend two locals, Sam Granger the owner of a popular coffee bar and a young female police officer Janet Wisniak who appear to be very supportive of him. Overtime Matt develops a romantic relationship with Janet. All the while, Matt is unaware of the conspirators plan of his demise. The many meetings among the conspirators are always being observed by a mysterious individual that we never see. Who is this person? A guardian angel? Or some other sinister plotter. Things come to a head when Matt is falsely jailed for possession of cocaine by Chief McNaulty but then released when the evidence somehow disappears further enraging the Chief. How did the cocaine magically disappear?
Then out of nowhere Matt's old girlfriend Susan Nolan comes to Pine Grove Beach at the great umbrage of Matt. One of the conspirators overhears Matt discussing his displeasure of her pending visit with Sam at the local bar and informs Chief McNaulty who hatches a plan to finally rid the conspirators of Matt and now perceived helper Janet. Just as Chief McNaulty is ready to kill Matt and Janet he is tased by the "mystery" person who turns out to be Mitch Hubbard, Matt's long lost twin brother he never knew he had until just recently. Turns out the conspirators thought Matt was Mitch who they thought they killed a year ago to cover the conspiracy. In a further turn, Janet turns out to be an FBI agent who has been investigating the conspirators for months trying to pull together a case against them.
In the end, Matt reconnects with his twin brother Mitch, all the conspirators are brought to justice and Matt decides to join Janet at the Portland FBI office in the cyber security division as well as continue their romantic relationship. The journey ends with Matt, Miles and Mitch driving back to visit Matt's adopted parents in California.
