SYNOPSIS:
In the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, freed slaves migrated to Northern Union states in hopes of finding work. This story starts in Southern Illinois where a young woman, Tabby, has her eyes opened to the injustices of the world when her black friend is wrongly captured by men who wish to sell him back into slavery. He escapes, but not without losing his documents showing he is a freed man. Tabby finds obstacles by being a woman in a frontier dominated by men. Once in Memphis, Tabby dedicates her purpose to helping the sick and dying by serving in a yellow fever sanitarium. In her innocent way, she crosses political, racial, and economic boundaries in a time when it wasn't usually done. Tabby will see how the deadly pandemic brings out the best and worst in people and how the deaths leave devastation to those left behind. In the end, she becomes the mother of orphans who will grow up to aspire to do great things. One will even find herself as an assistant to Dr. Walter Reed who is on his way to become famous for his research on yellow fever.
