Struggling with her bigoted father's death, a young queer woman returns to her haunted family estate to try and save it from being condemned.
SYNOPSIS:
Five years after her father TOM’s death, GIORGINA “GI” COSENTINO moves into her family compound (house and adjoining cemetery) with her wheelchair-bound mother, SHIRLEY and brother, PETER to save it from being taken over by the city. Gi struggles to make ends meet as a hairdresser. She tells Shirley she’s stopped taking her “meds.”
Local police visit a man named WARREN and advise him to stop stalking the Cosentino compound. Warren tells them the house is cursed and Gi is in danger. Gi reunites with IMMIE who’s angry with Gi for “ghosting” her after Gi ran off to NYC to escape her family’s trauma. Later, Gi and Immie make up. In a flashback, Teenage Gi sees a ghost in her rooms during the party in 1986, where she first kisses Immie.
In present day (1996), the ghost of JOHN JAKES, a Civil War soldier whose family is interred in a crypt in the Cosentino cemetery, shows Gi glimpses of family lore through visions. Gi believes she’s having nightmares, but Shirley notices a bruise on Gi’s arm that could only have come from an encounter with John Jakes. Gi and Shirley bump into Warren at Home Depot where he confronts Gi, and she runs off. At Gi’s niece MARLENA’s, birthday party where there are no other guests, Gi watches John Jakes threaten Marlena and her terrified reaction upsets Peter.
Gi finally allows Warren to explain that his retired cop father, WILLIAM, killed a home intruder in 1946 inside her house. The intruder turned out to be Gi’s great Uncle, CLYDE COSENTINO. Warren believes that whatever cursed the house has also cursed William and has been awakened by Gi's return. He pleads with her to let the house go. Immie confronts Gi about her mental state and their relationship. She breaks it off, but as a parting gift, Immie uses her resources at work as a police administrative manager to give Gi a file on the house’s history.
Gi confronts John Jakes who leads her to his unfinished grave in a crypt behind the house, next to the grave of LORETTA JAKES COSENTINO. Gi learns through further visions that Jakes also haunted her ancestors. Afterwards, she falls through an abyss back into the house and collapses. Immie appears, having called 911 after her last encounter with Gi caused her alarm. Gi is taken to the hospital where Peter visits her and the two relive the night their father died. In flashback, Gi and Immie come out to Tom, who leaves in a rage with Shirley, drives drunk, and crashes, killing himself and putting Shirley in the wheelchair. Gi blames herself. Later, there is a stunning reveal during Gi’s therapy session indicating all may not be what it seems and Gi is sicker than we imagined.
Gi discovers through Immie’s file that John Jakes was the illegitimate son of a Cosentino forebear. Jakes has chosen Gi to help him because he too was rejected by his father. Gi asks Warren to help her move Jakes’ remains to the Cosentino family plot. Before they can accomplish this, Gi experiences a final terrifying encounter with the ghosts of John Jakes, Clyde Cosentino, and Tom Cosentino, her own father, where she must confront her demons to become well. Once Jakes is laid to rest near his mother, Gi begins taking her meds and wins Immie back. Later, Gi allows the family home to be demolished, and a happily ever after ending seems imminent until a host of photographs fall off the wall of their new home, suggesting it too is haunted. John Jakes is now at rest, but what about Clyde and the rest of the Cosentino clan?
