CHRISTMAS PAST AND PRESENT
By Michael Zielinski

GENRE: Romance
LOGLINE:

Three couples at Christmastime encounter connection obstacles, the most compelling pairing a body-shaming victim with her one-time bully.

SYNOPSIS:

The primary couple are CHAD MORGAN and WHITNEY PAXTON. They see each other at the ski lodge at Christmastime for the first time since high school 15 years ago. He was the star quarterback, she was overweight and had a hopeless crush on him. He body shamed her at a Christmas dance their senior year, an incident that transformed both their lives.

Whitney now is a fitness trainer who specializes in training women who have body image issues. She has worked hard to distance herself physically and emotionally from her unhappy high school years.

Chad, now a columnist for a major New York newspaper, is an advocate for victims of body shaming. His younger sister was bullied over her weight in high school and seeing what she went through not only made him feel guilty about what he did to Whitney but also made him an advocate.

Upon seeing her at the ski lodge, Chad apologies to Whitney and pursues a relationship with her. Whitney is conflicted and feeling vulnerable, still very much attracted to him but scarred by him. She initially rejects his overtures.

After a change of heart, she connects with him, only have to have his on-again, off-again ex-girlfriend HEATHER BENSON arrive unexpectedly at the lodge and short-circuit Chad’s attempts to develop his relationship with Whitney.

Chad, with some help from Charles Dickens, his high school yearbook and his sister’s phone conversation with Whitney on Christmas Eve, ultimately wins her over.

There are two secondary couples.

NICK SIMMONS, a plumber, has accompanied Chad to the ski lodge. NATALIE BACHMAN, a chemical engineer with a doctorate degree, has accompanied Whitney.

Nick and Natalie are attracted to each other, but her advanced degree makes him self-conscious about his lack of higher education. He becomes more comfortable with her upon learning that Natalie’s father is a plumber. She stresses to him that he should not have self-esteem issues over being a plumber. Later she talks him into working for her father and eventually taking over the business.

TIFFANY LEWIS and her 12-year-old son JOSH come to the ski lodge so he can ski for the first time as a Christmas present after losing his lower left leg in a car accident four years earlier. The medical team and physical therapists at a children’s hospital put him back on his feet again, thanks to a prosthetic. BRETT ROBERTS is the ski instructor who gives Josh some refresher lessons.

Tiffany and Brett are instantly attracted to one another, but Tiffany is hesitant to pursue a relationship because she feels that would be cheating on her late husband. After seeing how quickly Josh bonds with Brett and how kind and considerate the latter is, she changes her mind, giving her a special Christmas present as well.

In the spirit of the holidays, the three freshly minted couples spend Christmas morning singing carols in the snow.
