DARK OP
By Bruce Leaf

GENRE: Action
LOGLINE: A Special Forces soldier is sent to the Congo to kill a rogue Army officer who uses mercenaries to terrorize civilians to finance his secret operation and kingdom.

SYNOPSIS:

Rennie “RAINY” Verplank learns from his father, an embittered coal miner, that he must fight for everything in life and that he must win at all costs. He warns Rainy to trust no one, to always look out for himself, and never to become a miner. When the coal miners go on strike, Rainy watches helplessly as a cop kills his father while he drives a bulldozer through a mob of angry scabs. Years later, when Rainy is a veteran in the Special Forces, he is sent to the Congo to destroy an Army officer, COLONEL DRAKE, who operates as a warlord and wreaks havoc on the civilians. He and his soldiers steal diamonds from open pit miners, threaten a village with the Ebola virus, and battle for a gold mine. Drake suspects Rainy is not an ordinary sergeant from the very beginning, and his suspicions grow after Rainy kills a large wrestler in hand-to-hand combat, battles too courageously in a skirmish, and overcomes a crazy Afrikaner who has let loose a black mamba. He jails Rainy when an officer finds out he’s with the Special Forces. Drake reveals that he takes orders from the CIA and conducts his raids to finance his operation so it is off the books and away from the prying eyes of Congress and whistle-blowers. Meanwhile, Rainy observes Drake’s brutality and waits for the right moment to strike. It comes after a rebel leader, determined to rule the region, attacks Drake’s base and captures the gold mine. Rainy breaks out of his cell during the attack and with the help of a friendly soldier follows the rebel force toward the mine. On the way, Rainy, against his father’s advice, picks up a pretty doctor and a freelance journalist he recently met. The doctor worries that the rebels will enslave boys working in the mine, and the journalist wants to report on the coming fight to revive his failing career. Together, the four of them rescue the boys and aid Drake’s men in their battle against the rebels. Then Rainy stays behind while the others escape with the boys and fights Drake one on one. As Air Force jets unleash missiles on the gold mine, Rainy kills Drake and gets out of harm’s way.
