CLOUD KINGDOMS - SYNOPSIS

Three Aussie kids, James, Ruby, and Billy are playing in an abandoned theme park when suddenly a thunderstorm hits. When lightning strikes the Sky Rocket Ride it starts up – and transports them into the clouds!

There they meet two sky children, the caring CJ, and the spunky Floss, who show them the amazing cloud kingdom. There’s a funfair up here; a transport slide; cloud surfing; and even a zoo with poo-flinging orangutans! There are dangers too: pirate clouds, who steal water from others to make themselves bigger and bully boats full of mean kids.

The children visit a lighthouse and admire the star-studded sky. A wall also features pictures of heroes who died saving other people. They include Googly, a mythical cloud lifesaver who saved CJ and his brother Dan when they went surfing illegally.

Meanwhile, CJ and Floss’ parents work with the Cloud Council to return the ground children home. A rainbow could do it – if it holds their weight, and the pirate clouds and bully boats can be kept at bay. And there’s another problem: while timid James wants to return to the safety of home, Billy, who’s mourning the grandfather who raised him, wants to stay in this wonderful fantasy world and Ruby hopes to spend more time with CJ.

The five children attend graduation day at CJ’s sixth-grade class. At the Heroes’ Parade afterward, bullies jump the girls, but a policeman they’ve nicknamed Captain Smartypants tackles the miscreants.

It’s time for the Fly-By, an amazing event where another cloud creates an airtight seal over the one where people live. Then the air pressure inside changes, so you can fly! Everyone has great fun, except James, who decides he’d rather help Mrs. C with the horses. Some bullies try to shame him for it, but he faces them down. [AB1] Meanwhile, Ruby’s friendship with feisty Floss has helped her find her voice, and Billy’s adventures have shaken him out of the first darkness of his grief.

Over dinner, the grown-ups announce that a rainbow is scheduled to take the ground kids home tomorrow – hurrah! And if they agree to keep the existence of the kingdom secret, the Cloud Council will allow them to return for visits.

The next morning, before James, Ruby, and Billy leave, the five children go on the scary ghost train. When they emerge, they see pirates sucking up the cloud on which the fair is built, including a patch near where they’re standing! Fortunately, the adults, the cloud police, and even the bully boats are on hand, and usually mild and funny James works with them to thwart the pirates. Googly appears, saying he wasn’t needed as the kids managed the job themselves.

All five children have helped each other grow individually and saved themselves working as a team.

Finally, the rainbow is ready. The ground children slide down and return to Billy’s place, where they lie exhausted on his trampoline. They fall asleep searching the sky for signs of the cloud kingdom.

[AB1]When writing a synopsis, put one or two very significant events in detail. This is significant because it’s large-scale and striking and because you can naturally include a character detail.

This sounds like a fun series, Anne Maree Durnan. And great book cover!

I'm a little confused by this part of the logline: "Teaming up with two cloud kids and humour, all is fun and games until they come up against Pirate Clouds and Bully Boats to try and get back home." Do the Aussie kids team up with two cloud kids and humour before they come up against Pirate Clouds and Bully Boats or afterward?
