After her father's death, Suzanne has a dream that sets in motion the journey of a lifetime: her dream is for her tribe, the Pacific Northwest Chinook, to gain Federal recognition. With the help of her Uncle Earl, Suzanne carves a dugout canoe from a cedar log. She paddles it over the open Pacific Ocean to an Indigenous canoe gathering in Seattle, where she comes closer to realizing her dream.
