The dramatic true story of one night during WWII when 16-year-old John Spence experienced the full force of the German Luftwaffe during the Southampton Blitz in 1940.
SYNOPSIS:
John Spence was born and grew up in the tiny village of Woodgreen in the New Forest, UK. By 1940 he had found employment at the 'Supermarine factory' in the south-coast port and city of Southampton working with Spitfires and lodging in nearby Woolston with an aunt. With the bombing of the city becoming a regular occurrence, the tranquility of life in the forest is now a distant memory and his only wish is to be able to return home for Christmas.
To John and his young companions, Ern, Gladys and Lil, the bombings and nightly fire storms at first hold a morbid excitement... a fireworks display to be marveled at from a safe distance. Events, however, take a deadly turn one night, when the Luftwaffe shift their aim to residential streets with Woolston being in the direct firing line.
An avid writer and diarist, John wrote a detailed account of his experiences. When Death Fell From The Skies is adapted from his account and is a valuable insight into the violence of war as experienced by the civilian population of Southampton.
