A coming of age series about a group of 7th graders in the 90s who want to start their own R&B music group; the only problem is, none of them can sing… until the new kid moves into town.
SYNOPSIS:
Dante’s half-White, half-Brown, has lived in “The Stack” his whole life. The 8th grader is a nobody at school and a babysitter to the neighbor kid his divorced pops is supposed to watch. But pops struggles just to put food on the table until he can get a promotion.
In this part of the Bay Area, you either rep the North Side, South Side, or stay off the grid, and these lil marks that ain’t part of a click aren’t welcome. Unfortunately, Dante’s not really accepted by the Whites because he’s too “Wet Back,” AND the Browns think he’s too “Miklo.” So Dante balances finding a place as a 14-year-old trying to fit in. He’s a music misfit. Puts on his headphones, turns up a dope track, and gets lost in his imagination, picturing what his fantasy life could be like as a rising music star. But it’s just that... a fantasy.
Until he meets the “FLY” crew. An R&B music group at school. They’re fitting to be the next “BBD.” And what’s super dope is; that these fools honestly are a bunch of outcasts, like Dante, with big aspirations in a neighborhood that constantly keeps you down. They find family in music and each other. Dante’s excited ... til he hears them sing. These dudes ain’t stand a chance. However, DJ Beatz, who runs the school radio show, is a hella fly producer. She makes legit beats. And a few of the others — BRUH! Their dance moves?!?! And one can write fresh hooks. But how do you turn that into a balling music group? And how can a White-Mexican ever be accepted into a Brown and Black R&B group?
It doesn’t take long before these teens become their own crew. They figure out how to chop it up with the girls and boys, maneuver school, earn cash to help their families, and survive the hood together. It’s a series about hopes, dreams, growing up in the 90s, racial division, and finding a family through music. A coming-of-age tale about how a group of teens will sacrifice everything to become one of the greatest R&B groups of all time... the only thing that can stop them... is life itself.
