WILD CAMPING

WILD CAMPING
By Suzy Miller

GENRE: Horror
LOGLINE:

Trapped on a yoga retreat in a family holiday, an ambitious female student loses faith in science as campers turn cannibal, addicted to the petrochemicals in human flesh, their bodies invaded by mycelium imbued with the spirit of the Scientist’s dead mother.

SYNOPSIS:

Ambitious young scientist ALICE takes her FATHER and deaf eco-activist GIRLFRIEND to a wild camping yoga retreat, failing to mention it’s run by her former PhD mentor KALI. They become trapped in what they believe to be a government mandated four day lock-down, but Alice uncovers Kali is running a covert pharmaceutical trial amongst the DEAF CAMPERS - research inspired by Alice's deceased mother’s work with fungal mycelium.

Initially, Alice is excited by Kali’s breakthrough with a drug that makes humans impervious to the toxins in oil, putting more pressure on an already shaky relationship with Alice's Girlfriend who suspects she was misled about the real purpose of the holiday. Alice begins to doubt her Mentor Kali when she realises there are side effects to the drug. An addiction to consuming oil products - spread to her Father who is found drinking his aftershave after being bitten by a bio-engineered mosquito.

Alice is infuriated by the insistence that Kali is evil by the conspiracy theorist room-for-refugees HOUSEGUEST her father insisted on bringing along, and frustrated with her Girlfriend claiming that the woodland mycelium is invading their bodies, seen through her infrared photography. Alice realises the mycelium is attracted to anyone who has absorbed petrochemicals from every day products.

Alice discovers that she is not the only person who has a poor relationship with The Truth. Her Father reveals her mother committed suicide when her research work was misused and she realises Kali has lied about controlling the side effects of her drug, and is primarily interested in maintaining her funding from Big Pharma. At any cost.

Finally, Alice is forced to evaluate her own ethics whilst contending with the frightening effects of the experimental vaccine as the Camper’s addiction leads them to cannibalise anyone with traces of oil products in their bodies.

Watching helplessly as an oil-addicted teenage girl extracts her own liver to consume the petrochemicals stored within it, the Scientist is confronted with her own complicity. It’s not only her mother’s research - but her own work targeting the gene associated with deafness - that has made the creation of this drug possible.

Finding the humility to admit she was wrong to put her unquestioning faith in science, Alice moves her allegiance away from science to trusting in nature, and rejects the offer of a lucrative career with Kali. She suspects that the mycelium is not a malevolent force but in fact is imbued with the spirit of her dead mother.

Alice's escape plan fails spectacularly. When all seems lost, the wood-wide-web mycelium overcomes the Campers, and detoxes them from the drug. Fungi sprouts from Kali's face when she tries to stop them escaping, until her head explodes in a mass of confetti-like spores.

Alice escapes the campsite as a wiser, more compassionate young woman than when she arrived, with a more honest relationship with both her Girlfriend, and her Father. However, there remains one mosquito vector of the oil-addiction serum buzzing on a leaf at the Eden Centre, full to capacity with tourists.
