"Bedlam Express" A piece of racing sculpture under construction at the Artisans Asylum, for the upcoming June 6th race that opens the Cambridge river festival.

Since the Asylum is all about getting tools into peoples hands, and taking inspiration from another race that used to happen in their home city, (Belt Sander Drag Racing) we are building a giant model of a modified class racer. (Scale 1 foot to the inch - the prototype is just over 12" long, the model just over 12' long) Construction is various kinds of foam, over a welded steel frame. The appearance of aluminum castings is going to be faked by a layer of "space blankets", the metalized mylar sheets that they hand runners at the end of a marathon.

The prototype is a late 50's design, known to collectors as a "locomotive" style machine, as it draws styling cues from the streamlined passenger trains of the day. Bet you didn't know mid century modern style extended to mundane shop tools.
