About Janna

Hi! Name name is Janna R. Lopez Räven (Taos Pueblo & Yaqui). I am a location sound mixer for film (since 2008), Sound Designer for Live theatre (since 2001), Live sound effect for radio (since 2007). In my spare time (on vacations) I do field recording for my own environmental sound effects. I am always thinking in and about sound.

I am originally from Glendale, CA but I have been to Uconn for one year and University of Victoria, BC Canada for four years.

At Glendale Community College (Glendale, CA not AZ) on my first sound design show of Biloxi Blues (by Neil Simon) I got nominated for ACTF (American College theatre festival region 8) for Sound Design for live theatre. The fallowing year in 1994 I won the region 8 Kate Lawrence award for Sound Design.

I worked with numerous theatre companies in the Los Angeles area as a Sound Designer after graduating from Uvic; including Native Voices at the Autry for 7 years. Six of there plays I Sound Designed traveled to the Pacific theatre in NYC, West in London, and Traveled thru Australia.

In 2007 I did the SCIC (Southern California Indian Centre) training for sound for film (funded by Floyd Red Crow Westerman) where my first film I boomed. I not only impressed the sound mixer for the film; the film “Ancestor eyes” later won 11 independent film awards in 2 years.

Live sound effects for radio, I train under David Shimm at NATF (National Audio Theatre Festival) in 2007 summer; then under Tony Palarmo with Native Voices and CART (California Artist Radio Theatre) 2008-2010; and under Peggy Weber with CART. (Peggy Weber is the oldest woman who has done "Live sound effects for radio". She started when she was 16 in the 1940's.)

Field recording I learned under Roy Lopez (no relation to me) at NATF 2007.

I have my own Facebook work page under my name which is open to the public which also has notes of what do, sound lectures I have attended, resume, photos of me on set, and articles I post on my work page to inform film freinds who have joined. (I will try to share here as well.)

I do have some favorite sound book I do refer to by Dean Miles. I call it the "Location Sound Bible”; it is called “Location Audio Simplified.” I do have four other books on hold thru ibooks that I can’t wait to read.

Unique traits: I am a highly detailed person because I am a person who does not like not having enough information. I always need enough information to make the best choices on set for sound. I always want to give the best to every film I work on.
